  • Resumen es exacto "The maintenance, repair and strengthening of concrete structures has become a growing activity in the construction industry. However, there is no guidance for professionals and the repair industry in general on the selection of the optimal material from the wide range available on the market, nor is there a consensus on a method to evaluate them. In the current work a performance-based protocol was developed to evaluate and select a technical cement-based mortar as a solution to this problem. The protocol calls for the following actions: • First, a pre-selection of the most appropriate material for a given application is proposed, considering the functional requirements and the customer needs. Thereby, the most important criteria and the minimal requirements are defined. • Second, a comparison is made between different products based on the product specifications presented by the manufacturer or, if it is possible, the result of performance evaluations in the laboratory. To solve this multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied. This method is a tool designed by Thomas L. Saaty, in the 1970s. • Finally, the protocol presents a graphic which is intended to be a refence for the professional responsible for the repair, to enable them to monitor the properties and building conditions which have the greatest impact on the final performance of the material. The material evaluation was made following IRAM 1715 and 1716. In order to gain an in depth understanding of the suitability of the material, both in the laboratory and on site, ranges of requirements and test methods are suggested to study the volume change, bond strength, mechanical compatibility and robustness. These methods proved to be suitable and repeatable, requiring few resources. The current work shows that the protocol is extremely useful and easy to apply and that the evaluation of the materials in the laboratory prior to their application is very important to verify the product specifications presented by manufacturer while also identifying the properties and building conditions to monitor at the time of the placement which could significantly affect the performance of the materials and therefore the effectiveness of the repair."
