Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In this thesis a photocatalytic reactor model using a titanium dioxide slurry was developed. A batch laboratory scale photocatalytic reactor excited by an UVC lamp was built. Orange II was chosen as model contaminant. It was verified by means of optical microscopy that the operation in almost neutral conditions leads to the formation of agglomerates of TiO2 nanoparticles with characteristic sizes of tens of microns, which makes easier and more inexpensive the subsequent removal of the catalyst from the suspension. It was found that there is a linear relationship between the mean radius of the agglomerates and the catalyst concentration in the studied range. Optical propagation as a function of wavelength and ultrasound of different frequencies for different catalyst concentrations was studied. Based on the experimental results of diffuse reflectance, a scale function was proposed that links the extinction length of the radiation and the catalyst concentration, for different wavelengths of the incident radiation. It was determined that the excess ultrasonic attenuation (with respect to deionized water) depends linearly on the catalyst concentration and is inversely proportional to the square of the frequency. This makes it possible to estimate the concentration of the suspension as a linear function of the excess ultrasonic attenuation. Furthermore, it was found that the propagation speed of sound in the suspension coincides (within experimental uncertainty), with that of deionized water at the same temperature at all frequencies and concentrations studied. The reactor was modeled considering complete mixing and absence of direct photolysis of the model contaminant. These hypotheses were verified experimentally. The model takes into account the following aspects: (1) emission of radiation, (2) absorption and scattering of radiation, (3) mixing, and (4) degradation kinetics of the pollutant by photoconversion. The photoconversion kinetics was modeled using a system of differential equations, represented as an equivalent circuit. The parameters of the model were determined experimentally and a good agreement was obtained with the experimental data. From the developed model, the reactor parameters were optimized for the following criteria: (1) Conversion of the pollutant after 6 h of irradiation, (2) Specific energy consumption for 90% conversion and (3) Time for 90% conversion. For each of the criteria, the optimal values of electrical irradiation power, external radius of the annulus, and catalyst concentration were found. Finally, the model was applied to analyze the construction of a pilot scale reactor that has started.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The thesis work proposes a methodology to determine the technically and economically adapted low voltage (LV) electrical distribution network, in a random scenario of incorporating photovoltaic distributed generation (PVDG). A network is adapted when it is designed minimizing total costs (fixed and variable) and optimizing equipment to adequately meet demand (both current demand and its expected growth). The proposed method, based on common practice, incorporates the concept of Hosting Capacity (HC) or Statistical Capacity Factor (FCE). Typical LV networks of the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) are taken as the object of study. The networks are resolved by means of a statistical power flow, taking residential demand, PVDG penetration and the power and location of the photovoltaic generators within the network as random variables. Through this methodology, the statistical capacity factor (FCE) is obtained, which is used to carry out the technical-economic study of the network. Finally, the adapted network is obtained for each level of PVDG penetration. In this study, it is the user who decides to install generation power at any point in the network (less than or equal to their contracted power), regardless of whether or not this is optimal for the network. This implies the exclusion of the cost of the generators in the calculation of the network, as it is considered an exogenous factor to the planning of the network. This is a look from the perspective of the energy distribution company, which must establish in advance the technically and economically adapted network for each possible state of PVDG penetration.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
In astrophysics and cosmology, as in other areas of physics, the next decade will bring a new generation of extremely powerful instruments, such as Euclid or the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. An accurate model of the point spread function (PSF), i.e., the instrumental response of the optical system, is a fundamental requirement to meet ambitious scientific goals. The WaveDiff model is a semi-parametric wavefront model for data-driven PSF estimation. This method, developed in the CosmoStat lab, builds the PSF model directly on the wavefront space and is based on a differentiable optical model that integrates the physical processes to go from a wavefront error (WFE) to a pixel-level PSF, integrating the wavelength dependency over the instrument bandwidth alongside the spectral energy distribution of observed stars (SED). In this work an error analysis of the model with respect to aberrations on the input SED data is carried out. A method is proposed to alleviate the impact of SED degradation (spectral binning and photometric measurements noise) on the model predictions. The WaveDiff model is optimised and put to test with different dataset sizes to consider the possible benefit of increasing the number of observations used. Finally, a new optimisation paradigm was proposed for the semiparametric model that allows to substantially improve the optimisation of the parametric model decreasing prediction errors both in wavefront and pixel space.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The different sources of energy, the consequences of their depletion, and the fluctuations in energy prices in the world market form the axis of the global energy debate. The growing need for energy and the environmental impacts associated with all energy generation projects, in addition to the concern over climate change, have led to the search for new horizons in the area of non-polluting renewable energies. This global situation has allowed the development of a new source of energy: hydrokinetic energy, which uses the kinetic energy contained in river currents, tidal currents, and artificial channel currents to generate electrical energy. Despite its potential benefits, such as its low environmental impact and high predictability compared to other renewable sources, hydrokinetic energy is still at an early stage of development. Although there are already commercial-type devices installed in the world, significant research and development efforts are still required to turn hydrokinetic energy into a competitive alternative compared to other more established energy sources. This thesis develops a comprehensive optimization methodology for the hydraulic design of a horizontal axis hydrokinetic turbine, based on numerical modeling. The methodology seeks to maximize the energy extracted from the flow, increasing the profitability of the system and contributing to the feasibility of hydrokinetic energy as a solid alternative for energy development in the 21st century. The use of a composite methodology that successively applies inverse and direct design methods is proposed. In an initial stage, a preliminary geometry is generated using the lifting line method and optimizing the pressure distribution on the rotor blades for ideal flow conditions. The rotor geometry is further optimized in a second stage based on a surrogate model, generated from numerical analyses using a Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) three-dimensional viscous flow model. The goal is to create a robust and flexible methodology that allows the systematic design of hydrokinetic rotors for an arbitrary combination of flow and installation conditions. The method minimizes the number of geometric assumptions required and therefore also its dependence on the designer's experience.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Time delay cosmography is an approach that has emerged in the last decade to estimate the Hubble constant, i.e., the current expansion rate of the universe. Its main ingredient is to obtain the photometry of point sources in gravitational lenses. This requires deconvolution of observations acquired by space or ground-based telescopes. In this work, a new image deconvolution method called STARRED is proposed, which uses a Point Spread Function narrower than the original one. At the same time, the latter is produced using NarrowPSFGen, a technique developed in this thesis.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
