A lo largo de la historia, el agua y la agricultura han estado estrechamente vinculadas. La mayor parte de los alimentos del mundo proviene de la agricultura de secano que depende de la humedad del suelo proveniente casi exclusivamente de la precipitacion. En las proximas decadas, la produccion agricola tendra lugar en el contexto de un clima cambiante, esperando importantes cambios en la frecuencia y severidad de inundaciones y sequias. La agricultura de secano seguirá siendo particularmente vulnerable a los excesos y deficit de las precipitaciones. Esto hace que sea imprescindible desarrollar estrategias solidas para limitar perdidas ambientales y económicas asociadas a eventos extremos y cambios regionales del clima. Comprender los vinculos entre los agroecosistemas, el agua y la produccion de alimentos es importante para pensar estrategias de manejos por parte de los productores agricolas en las condiciones actuales y futuras. Para eso es necesario seguir profundizando el conocimiento del funcionamiento de los agroecosistemas y su interrelacion con la disponibilidad del agua. La produccion de informacion relevante para la toma de decisiones de los productores requiere una comprension exhaustiva e integradora, no solo de los vinculos fisicos y biologicos entre los cultivos y el agua, sino tambien de los contextos economicos y sociales en los que toman las decisiones. Esta tesis tiene como objetivo avanzar en la caracterizacion de los vínculos entre la hidrologia, el clima, el uso del suelo y la toma de decisiones agronomicas en una subcuenca del rio Salado del Sur en la llanura pampeana, una de las principales regiones productoras de cereales y semillas oleaginosas del mundo, utilizando como principal herramienta de analisis la modelacion numerica. Throughout history, water and agriculture have been closely linked. Most of the world's food arise from rainfed agriculture, which depends on soil moisture almost exclusively due to precipitation. In the coming decades, agricultural production will take place in the context of a changing climate, awaiting major changes in the frequency and severity of floods and droughts. Rainfed agriculture will continue to be particularly vulnerable to excesses and deficits in rainfall. This makes it essential to develop sound strategies to limit environmental and economic losses associated with extreme events and regional climate changes. Understanding the links between agroecosystems, water, and food production is important to think about productive strategies by agricultural producers in current and future conditions. For this, it is necessary to continue deepening the knowledge on the functioning of agroecosystems and their interrelation with the availability of water. Producing information relevant to producers decision-making requires a comprehensive and inclusive understanding, not only of the physical and biological links between crops and water, but also of the economic and social contexts in which they take decisions. This thesis aims to advance in the characterization of the links between hydrology, climate, land use, and agronomic decision-making in a sub-basin of the South Salado River in the Pampas plain, one of the main cereal and oilseed productive regions of the world, using numerical modeling as the main tool for analysis.
