Esta tesis desarrolla un marco integral que acopla modelos de elementos finitos (EF) de alta fidelidad para uniones premium incluyendo contacto en sello y hombro, comportamiento elastoplástico y cinemática de deformaciones finitas— con ensayos a escala real y análisis tribológico. Primero, se construyen formulaciones axisimétricas y 3D para cuantificar el par–giro de make-up, la presión de contacto de sellado y la localización de tensiones y deforma- ciones en roscas y hombros. Segundo, se evalúa la influencia de la condición superficial —rugosidad, lubricante y recubrimientos de conversión— mediante campañas numérico- experimentales que explican el desempeño de estanqueidad al gas y los mecanismos de desgaste. Tercero, se implementa un nuevo elemento cuadrilateral de cuatro nodos con integración de Gauss y nodal, junto con un algoritmo de retorno radial de von Mises, val- idado en benchmarks estándar (patch test, membrana de Cook, cilindro grueso). Cuarto, se introduce un sustituto basado en redes neuronales informadas por la física (PINN) para problemas elastoplásticos de esfuerzo plano y deformación plana, que acelera la estimación de campos de deformación plástica en conexiones roscadas manteniendo la fidelidad del EF. Finalmente, un modelo a nivel de sistema en Modelica/Dymola de una sarta completa de varillas de bombeo vincula los resultados a nivel de componente con el comportamiento de la tarjeta dinamométrica. La metodología integrada concuerda con soluciones analíticas y ensayos a escala real, y brinda indicadores operativos para la sellabilidad, la resistencia a la fatiga y la resistencia mecánica en aplicaciones de servicio crítico. Threaded connections used in oil-and-gas production are critical to well integrity and operating cost. This thesis develops a comprehensive framework that couples detailed finite-element (FE) models of premium joints—including contact at seal and shoulder, elastoplastic behavior, and finite-strain kinematics—with full-scale testing and tribological analysis. First, axisymmetric and 3D FE formulations are built to quantify torque–turn make-up, sealing contact pressure, and stress/strain localization at threads and shoulders. Sec- ond, the influence of surface condition—roughness, lubricant, and conversion coatings—is assessed through combined numerical–experimental campaigns to explain gas-tight perfor- mance and wear mechanisms. Third, a novel four-node quadrilateral element with Gauss and nodal integration is implemented with a von Mises radial-return algorithm and val- idated on standard benchmarks (patch test, Cook’s membrane, thick-cylinder). Fourth, a physics-informed neural-network (PINN) surrogate is introduced for plane stress/strain elastoplastic problems, accelerating the estimation of plastic strain fields in threaded con- nections while preserving FE fidelity. Finally, a system-level Modelica/Dymola model of a complete sucker-rod string links component-level results to dynamometer-card behavior. The integrated methodology is consistent with analytical solutions and full-scale tests and provides actionable indicators for sealability, fatigue resistance, and mechanical strength in critical-service applications. La identificación de blancos de manera remota representa un área de investigación con un potencial creciente en aplicaciones industriales, de seguridad e incluso biomédicas. En particular, los métodos basados en sensado Ultrawideband (UWB) se presentan como una excelente alternativa, permitiendo la caracterización de blancos de manera no destructiva y sin contacto directo con el objeto bajo estudio. Su principal atractivo respecto de otras tecnologías se encuentra en su gran ancho de banda. Esta propiedad permite la penetración de materiales dieléctricos, abriendo la puerta a aplicaciones prácticas, como la detección de objetos ocultos, la caracterización de materiales o la clasificación de blancos. Su ancho de banda se traduce a su vez en una elevada resolución espacial, permitiendo la localización precisa de objectos. Finalmente, estos sistemas de sensado resultan resistentes a las interferencias de otros sistemas y puede aprovechar la propagación multipath, permitiendo funcionamiento confiable incluso en entornos complejos o con obstáculo. Este trabajo se concentra en el estudio del uso de sensado UWB aplicado, a la caracterización de blancos dieléctricos, atacando dos problemas complementarios: por un lado, el de estimación del nivel de humedad, una propiedad cuantificable del material. Por otro lado, se estudia el problema de distinguir entre blancos de diferente composición. Este último problema resulta particularmente de interés en escenarios donde los blancos se encuentran ocultos, o bien resultan indistinguibles por métodos tradicionales o incluso inspección visual. Para resolver el primer problema propuesto se utilizan las señales temporales correspondientes a la respuesta del blanco al ser irradiado por un pulso UWB. En particular, se tomaron placas de poliamida a las que se les varió el contenido de humedad bajo condiciones experimentales controladas. Para esta parte del trabajo, se llevó a cabo el desarrollo de una plataforma experimental UWB impulsiva, diseñada y construida en conjunto con el Centro de Simulación Computacional (CSC), CONICET. Las mediciones obtenidas con esta plataforma se tomaron en ambientes estáticos, pero cuyas condiciones no se encuentran totalmente controladas. Las mismas son luego procesadas y utilizadas como entrada a un modelo de regresión basado en máquinas de vectores de soporte (SVM) para conseguir una caracterización automática. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que es posible estimar el nivel de humedad con un error cuadrático medio inferior al 10 %, lo que demuestra la viabilidad del enfoque propuesto. A partir de los resultados positivos obtenidos en la estimación del nivel de humedad, se propone una estrategia de procesamiento de las mediciones de forma que genere características que presenten mayor robustez frente a las condiciones experimentales. Esta estrategia se apoya en el modelado físico de la respuesta electromagnética. Según el Método de Expansión de Singularidades, la componente correspondiente a la respuesta de tiempo tardío de la señal dispersada por el blanco puede representarse como una suma de exponenciales complejas cuyas frecuencias naturales dependen únicamente del tamaño y la composición del blanco. Estas resonancias funcionan como una “firma” del blanco y constituyen una representación más estable y robusta de la señal frente a variaciones experimentales como la polarización de la onda incidente, el ángulo de incidencia o la posición del blanco. Para extraerlas, se aplican algoritmos de estimación espectral. Una vez extraídas las frecuencias de resonancia, es necesario procesarlas para generar vectores de características; para ello se genera una partición de las frecuencias en el plano complejo utilizando algoritmos de clustering, obteniendo así vectores de características ralos que pueden ser almacenados de forma eficiente y utilizados como entrada a clasificadores, como por ejemplo los basados en máquinas de vectores de soporte. El estudio incluye tanto simulaciones como datos experimentales. Por un lado, los modelos de suma de exponenciales y los desarrollos a partir de la serie de Mie permiten analizar con precisión el efecto de distintos parámetros, como el nivel de ruido del ambiente o perturbaciones en los blancos. Por otro lado, se realizaron mediciones para evaluar la posibilidad de clasificación de líquidos, en particular agua, alcohol y salmuera en recipientes idénticos. Estas mediciones fueron también llevadas a cabo en ambientes estáticos, pero no controlados. Los tres tipos de ensayos realizados muestran que mientras el análisis directo de las señales temporales resulta atractivo por su simplicidad, la representación basada en frecuencias naturales aporta ventajas en términos de reducción del error, robustez y reducción de dimensionalidad del problema. En particular, con los datos experimentales se logró disminuir el error en un orden de magnitud. Por su parte, las simulaciones basadas en datos generados a partir de la serie de Mie ponen de manifiesto una mejora significativa en la performance al aumentar la relación señal a ruido de los datos Remote target identification represents a research area with growing potential in industrial, security, and even biomedical applications. In particular, Ultrawideband (UWB) sensing methods emerge as an excellent alternative, enabling non-destructive and non-contact characterization of targets. Their main advantage over other technologies lies in their large bandwidth, which allows penetration through dielectric materials and opens the door to practical applications such as concealed object detection, material characterization, and target classification. Moreover, their wide bandwidth translates into high spatial resolution, enabling precise object localization. Finally, UWB sensing systems are resistant to interference from other systems and can even benefit from multipath propagation, allowing reliable operation in complex or cluttered environments. This work focuses on the study of UWB sensing applied to the characterization of dielectric targets, addressing two complementary problems: on the one hand, the estimation of moisture content, a quantifiable material property; and on the other, the discrimination among targets of different compositions. The latter problem is particularly relevant in scenarios where the targets are hidden or indistinguishable by traditional methods or even visual inspection. To address the first problem, the temporal signals corresponding to the target’s response when irradiated by a UWB pulse are used. Specifically, polyamide plates with varying moisture content were analyzed under controlled experimental conditions. For this purpose, an impulsive UWB experimental platform was developed and constructed in collaboration with the Computational Simulation Center (CSC), CONICET. Measurements were taken in static environments, though not under fully controlled conditions. These signals were subsequently processed and used as input to a regression model based on Support Vector Machines (SVM) to achieve automatic characterization. The results show that it is possible to estimate moisture content with a mean squared error below 10 Based on the positive results obtained in moisture estimation, a processing strategy is proposed to generate features with greater robustness against experimental variations. This strategy relies on the physical modeling of the electromagnetic response. According to the Singularity Expansion Method (SEM), the late-time component of the scattered signal can be represented as a sum of complex exponentials whose natural frequencies depend solely on the target’s size and composition. These resonances act as a “signature” of the target and provide a more stable and robust representation of the signal against experimental variations such as the polarization of the incident wave, the angle of incidence, or the target’s position. To extract these frequencies, spectral estimation algorithms are applied. Once the resonances are obtained, they are processed to generate feature vectors by partitioning the frequencies in the complex plane using clustering algorithms. This results in sparse feature vectors that can be efficiently stored and used as input to classifiers, such as those based on Support Vector Machines. The study includes both simulations and experimental data. On one hand, the sum-of-exponentials models and the developments derived from Mie series analysis allow a detailed study of the effects of various parameters, such as ambient noise level or target perturbations. On the other hand, measurements were conducted to assess the feasibility of classifying liquids—specifically water, alcohol, and saline solution—contained in identical vessels. These measurements were also performed in static but uncontrolled environments. The three types of experiments demonstrate that, while the direct analysis of temporal signals is attractive due to its simplicity, the representation based on natural frequencies offers significant advantages in terms of error reduction, robustness, and dimensionality reduction. In particular, for experimental data, the classification error was reduced by an order of magnitude.
