Esta tesis tiene por objeto el estudio de sistemas de transducción eléctricoac ústico en aire como medio de reproducción de sonido sin elementos mecánicos móviles. Una de las posibles alternativas para lograr esta transducción directa sin diafragma es a través de una descarga gaseosa. Este tipo de parlantes llevan diferentes nombres tales como parlantes iónicos, de plasma, corona, de arco eléctrico o electrohidro- dinámicos. Si bien esta tecnología es conocida desde hace más de un siglo pocos grupos de investigación en el mundo se encuentran trabajando sobre esta temática. Además, existen muy pocas publicaciones sobre parlantes de plasma en comparación con las existentes sobre parlantes convencionales de alta fidelidad (de bobina móvil principalmente y en menor medida electrostáticos). La tabla 1.1 refleja esta situación. Aunque los datos son aproximados, permiten cuantificar el bajo nivel de difusión y madurez de los parlantes iónicos. Es importante destacar que dentro de la familia de los parlantes que utilizan una descarga gaseosa existen subtipos. Por ejemplo, el principio de funcionamiento de los denominados parlantes corona es sustancialmente diferente a los que utilizan un arco eléctrico. A su vez, la descarga eléctrica puede lograrse con tensión continua o con radiofrecuencia. En síntesis, el total de publicaciones disminuye aún más si consideramos cada uno de los subtipos. Es por ello que podemos afirmar que si bien el conocimiento del fenómeno es antiguo, el grado de desarrollo de la tecnología es bajo. Para lograr el nivel de sofisticación y desempeño que poseen tanto los parlantes de bobina móvil como los electrostáticos es todavía necesario que sean destinados gran cantidad de recursos. En particular, este trabajo estudia principalmente la transducción a través de una descarga corona generada con una tensión continua. Hoy en día, la mayoría de los parlantes de alta fidelidad son de bobina móvil. Su eficiencia, madurez tecnológica y difusión en el mundo los convierten en la principal fuente de reproducción de ondas sonoras tanto a nivel hogareño como profesional. Sin embargo, los resultados de nuestro trabajo nos permiten vislumbrar el potencial que poseen los parlantes estudiados frente a los demás tipos de parlantes que necesariamente precisan de partes mecánicas móviles. Al utilizar un diafragma aparecen principalmente tres problemáticas inherentes que, en función de como sean abordadas por el diseño, determinan el desempeño de la fuente de sonido. En primer lugar, el diafragma no se comporta siempre como un sólido ideal [2, 3, 4]. En efecto, mientras la excitación se encuentre por debajo de la primer resonancia, el diafragma se comporta de manera rígida. A frecuencias más altas, se excitan modos superiores de vibración del cono y se manifiesta el llamado cone breakup [5]. En esta condición, se pierde el control del movimiento del diafragma. La suposición de que se comporta como un pistón simple deja de ser válida y la distorsión se incrementa notoriamente. En segundo lugar, la masa del diafragma limita la respuesta del parlante en alta frecuencia [2]. Y por último, si un mismo diafragma reproduce grandes y pequeñas longitudes de onda, se manifiesta distorsión por efecto Doppler [6, 7]. Una excelente y extensa enumeración de éstas y otras alinealidades en parlantes convencionales puede encontrarse en el trabajo de Klippel (2006) [8]. Un parlante de plasma permite obtener, a muy bajo costo, una fuente de ondas acústicas de media y alta frecuencia (incluso ultrasonido) sin picos debidos a resonancias. A su vez pueden generarse frentes de onda imposibles de lograr mediante parlantes convencionales. Por ejemplo, construimos un reproductor de ondas cilíndricas que permitió la caracterización de un metamaterial acústico. Los detalles de esta experiencia se detallan más adelante. Si bien ésta es una aplicación específica demuestra el potencial de esta tecnología. A lo largo del desarrollo de este trabajo, llegamos a la conclusión de que no es procedente comparar un parlante que utiliza diafragma con uno iónico. Cada tecnología apunta a necesidades diferentes. Por ejemplo, un parlante iónico no podría reproducir los altos niveles de presión sonora necesarios para eventos masivos (tales como recitales de música) con la eficiencia que logra un parlante dinámico. Ahora bien, un parlante de bobina móvil no puede generar fácilmente un frente de onda no plano en las condiciones requeridas para el caso mencionado.
