La valorización de glicerol, principal subproducto de la reacción de transesterificación de ácidos grasos resulta muy relevante para la industria del sector energético en general y para el mercado del biodiesel en particular. La esterificación de glicerol con ácido acético es una de las diferentes alternativas para valorizar el glicerol subproducto de la producción de biodiesel. Este es, principalmente, un sistema de tres reacciones en serie siendo los productos de reacción monoacetina, diacetina, triacetina y agua. En particular, la triacetina, es el producto de mayor valor agregado de este proceso, por lo que permitiría incrementar la rentabilidad del glicerol; sin embargo, presenta limitaciones en su selectividad asociadas a la naturaleza del sistema reactivo. Es por este motivo que se plantea la factibilidad de emplear la tecnología de destilación reactiva en el proceso de esterificación de glicerol con ácido acético, con el objeto de aumentar significativamente la pureza hacia triacetina, ya que mediante la remoción del agua del medio de reacción sería posible desplazar los equilibrios de reacción hacia la formación de productos. Fundamentalmente, la combinación entre destilación reactiva y catalizadores heterogéneos permite subsanar las limitaciones térmicas que estos presentan, ya que la operación intensificada permite trabajar a menores temperaturas manteniendo o superando los rendimientos conocidos. En este sentido, en los próximos capítulos se lleva a cabo el modelado de la columna de destilación reactiva para la valorización de glicerol a través de su esterificación con ácido acético, empleando una resina de intercambio iónico (NKC-9) como catalizador con el fin de analizar el rango de condiciones operativas que permitan obtener una mayor selectividad hacia triacetina, identificando las variables presentan mayor incidencia en la performance de la columna. Adicionalmente, se considera el agregado de diferentes compuestos como entrainers o agentes de arrastre a fin de lograr una mejora significativa en la eficiencia de la columna, no sólo en términos de selectividad a la triacetina, sino también de consumo energético del proceso. Para realizar el modelado de la columna de destilación reactiva para la acetilación de glicerol se consideran la cinética de la reacción para la resina de intercambio iónico NKC-9 y los respectivos equilibrios químicos y de fases. En el Capítulo 1 del presente trabajo se realiza una breve introducción a la necesidad de desarrollar aplicaciones alternativas para el glicerol proveniente de la producción de biodiesel, a las condiciones del proceso de esterificación de glicerol con ácido acético y a la intensificación del proceso mediante destilación reactiva, finalmente se plantean los objetivos del trabajo. En el Capítulo 2, se desarrolla la metodología a considerar para llevar a cabo el modelado de la torre de destilación reactiva, se presentan entre otras cosas la selección de los modelos para la fase vapor y líquida y la cinética de la reacción, asimismo se definen algunos parámetros que serán 3 considerados para evaluar la incidencia las diferentes variables; por último, se presenta el caso base para el desarrollo del presente trabajo. Por su parte en el Capítulo 3, se presenta un estudio sistemático respecto a la influencia de diferentes variables sobre, principalmente, la selectividad a triacetina y el requerimiento energético del sistema. En particular se consideran variables constructivas: liquid holdup, variables operativas: relación de reflujo, presión de tope y relación destilado – alimentación (D/F) y variables relacionadas con la corriente de alimentación: relación molar ácido acético – glicerol (RM) e impurezas (concentración de agua) en la alimentación a la columna. En el Capítulo 4, se considera el agregado de diferentes compuestos como entrainer y el impacto sobre el sistema; con el entrainer que presenta el mejor desempeño se analiza un redimensionamiento de la columna manteniendo la producción a triacetina. Finalmente, en el Capítulo 5 se presentan las conclusiones obtenidas en el desarrollo del presente trabajo.
