La simulación de reservorios es una herramienta esencial para estudiar los fenómenos de flujo y transporte en el subsuelo, en el marco de aplicaciones energéticas y medioambientales. Para construir un primer mapa de las propiedades petrofísicas en el reservorio se utilizan datos provenientes de la prospección e interpretación geofísicas. Se trata de un modelo discreto (llamado modelo estático o malla fina), definido con una escala espacial característica o soporte Δ, que puede variar según la dirección espacial considerada. En general, es demasiado costoso computacionalmente simular el flujo en reservorio directamente sobre la malla fina. Por ello se suele realizar un procedimiento de cambio de escala (upscaling), que permite transferir las propiedades petrofísicas del reservorio desde la malla fina hacia una malla más gruesa de simulación (o modelo dinámico), con una escala espacial característica (o escala de agregación) λ > Δ, y sobre la cual es más factible realizar las simulaciones. En particular, en esta tesis se focaliza en la transformación de la conductividad hidráulica de la malla fina, k(r), en una equivalente, Keq, definida sobre la malla gruesa (r es el vector posición sobre la malla fina), que dicha magnitud es determinante de la estructura de flujo en el reservorio. Por otro lado, utilizamos un enfoque estocástico, en el cual, en lugar de evaluar un valor determinista de Keq proveniente de una única imagen o mapa del reservorio, consideramos un ensamble de realizaciones que pueden representarlo, y luego, analizamos la distribución de valores de Keq (función de densidad de probabilidad de Keq, o PDF por sus siglas en inglés) asociado a dicho ensamble. Ello permite considerar no sólo el promedio de ensamble o valor medio de Keq, sino los momentos (gaussianos) de orden mayor de la PDF, como la varianza y la oblicuidad. En esta tesis se comparan diferentes métodos (o formulaciones) locales y globales de upscaling, incluyendo uno nuevo basado en la disipación viscosa de energía, y se retiene un método local para el resto del trabajo. La forma en que las componentes de mayor conductividad hidráulica en el reservorio están organizadas espacialmente (sobre todo, la forma en que están conectadas), es determinante de Keq. En la segunda parte de la tesis se aborda la interrelación entre conectividad, la escala de agregación λ, y Keq, trabajando sobre dos tipos de reservorios modelo (o medios) ampliamente utilizados como referencia en la literatura: los multigaussianos, que tienen una distribución lognormal de conductividades observada frecuentemente en la naturaleza, por ejemplo para las rocas areniscas, y los binarios, que son una representación simplificada de reservorios compuestos de múltiples facies o unidades de flujo, dominios o zonas con diferentes conductividades características bien contrastantes. Por ejemplo, en términos de hidrofacies, un dominio en el cual predominen las areniscas (de alta conductividad) y otro en el cual predominen pelitas o lutitas (de baja conductividad). En ambos tipos, analizamos un rango amplio de escenarios de conectividad, considerando diferentes “estructuras de conectividad”, en las cuales las facies de alta conductividad tienen una conectividad aumentada o disminuida respecto de un caso intermedio, dado por los medios multigaussianos (truncados para el caso binario). En el caso de los reservorios multigaussianos, se modelan además diferentes grados de heterogeneidad variando la varianza de la distribución de la malla fina de conductividades, y las texturas de heterogeneidad variando la función de covarianza (o variograma) y su longitud de correlación (que da el “tamaño de granulado” de la heterogeneidad). En este sentido, uno de los resultados principales de la tesis muestra cómo se extienden predicciones teóricas y numéricas previas de otros autores, para la variación de Keq con λ en medios multigaussianos, a escenarios de conectividad más amplios. Para el caso de medios binarios, nos focalizamos en el entorno de la situación de percolación de la componente de alta conductividad en el reservorio, que ha presentado históricamente un desafío para el upscaling dado que implica la divergencia del VER (Volumen Elemental Representativo) y la no existencia de escalas espaciales características. Las diferentes texturas de la heterogeneidad se muestrean variando la proporción de componente de alta conductividad. La interrelación entre percolación, conectividad y Keq es estudiada en reservorios 2D y 3D. Se concluye en este caso que toda influencia de la conectividad sobre Keq puede explicarse simplemente por un corrimiento del umbral de percolación. Los resultados presentados en esta tesis muestran que incluir información explícita sobre la conectividad es importante en el cálculo de Keq. Reservoir simulation is an essential tool for the study of subsurface flow and transport phenomena in the context of energy and environmental applications. To create a first model of the petrophysical properties of the reservoir, data from geophysical surveys are used. This is a discrete model (called a static model or fine grid), defined with a support scale Delta, which may vary according to the spatial direction. In general, simulate the flow in the reservoir directly on the fine grid is too expensive. Therefore, an upscaling procedure is usually performed, that allows transferring the petrophysical properties of the reservoir from the fine grid to a coarser simulation grid (or dynamic model), with a characteristic spatial scale (or aggregation scale) lambda > Δ, on which it is more feasible to perform the simulations. In particular, this thesis focuses on the transformation of the hydraulic conductivity of the fine grid (k(r), r is the position vector on the fine grid), into an equivalent one (Keq), defined on the coarse grid, since this magnitude is critical for the flow structure in the reservoir. On the other hand, we use a stochastic approach, in which, instead of assessing a deterministic value of Keq from a single image or map of the reservoir, we consider an ensemble of realizations that can represent it, and then analyze the distribution of Keq values (Keq probability density function, or PDF) associated with that ensemble. This allows us to consider not only the ensemble average or mean value of Keq, but also the higher order (Gaussian) moments of the PDF, such as variance and skewness. In this thesis, different local and global upscaling methods (or formulations) are compared, including a new one based on viscous energy dissipation, and a local method is retained for the rest of the work. The way in which the components of higher hydraulic conductivity in the reservoir are spatially organized (especially, the way they are connected), has a major impact on Keq. In the second part of the thesis, the interrelationship between connectivity, the aggregation scale λ, and Keq is addressed, working on two types of model reservoirs (or media) widely used as reference in the literature: multigaussian ones, which have a lognormal distribution of conductivities frequently observed in nature, for example for sandstone rocks, and binary ones, which are a simplified representation of reservoirs composed of multiple facies or flow units, domains or zones with different well-contrasted characteristic conductivities. For example, a domain dominated by sandstones (high conductivity) and another dominated by pelites or shales (low conductivity). In both types, we analyzed a wide range of connectivity scenarios, considering different “connectivity structures”, in which the high conductivity facies have an increased or decreased connectivity with respect to an intermediate case, given by the multigaussian media (truncated for the binary case). In the case of multigaussian reservoirs, different degrees of heterogeneity are further modeled by varying the variance of the distribution of the fine grid conductivities, and the texture of heterogeneity by varying the covariance function (or variogram) and its correlation length (which gives the “grain size” of the heterogeneity). In this regard, one of the main results of the thesis shows how previous theoretical and numerical predictions by other authors, for the variation of Keq with λ in multigaussian media, are extended to a broader connectivity scenarios. For the case of binary media, we focus on the percolation of the high conductivity component of the reservoir, which has presented a challenge for upscaling since it involves the divergence of the REV (Representative Elemental Volume) and the lack of characteristic spatial scales. Different textures of heterogeneity are sampled by varying the proportion of the high conductivity component. The interrelationship between percolation, connectivity and Keq is studied in 2D and 3D reservoirs. It is concluded in this case that any influence of connectivity on Keq can be explained simply by a shift of the percolation threshold. Sin embargo esta tendencia podría llegar a estancarse si no se logra un avance significativo en algunas cuestiones, dos de las cuales serán estudiadas en esta tesis. Por un lado, el aprendizaje estadístico busca desarrollar algoritmos que no solo clasifiquen correctamente un conjunto de datos conocidos, sino que también este comportamiento se generalice a nuevas muestras. La capacidad de generalización de los algoritmos muchas veces es abordada con meras perturbaciones en la etapa de aprendizaje. Un inteligente uso de dichos métodos de perturbación podría traducirse en una mejora considerable de los algoritmos. Por otro lado, la teoría de información busca crear representaciones lo mas comprimidas posible, sin que esto afecte su posterior utilización. La cantidad de datos a almacenar crece exponencialmente día a día y métodos eficientes de compresión de la información se vuelven esenciales en el avance de estos tipos de tecnologías. La búsqueda de representaciones precisas y generalizables del aprendizaje estadístico, como la extracción de información concentrada en pocos datos de la teoría de información parecen ser dos caras de la misma moneda: el cuello de botella entre generar representaciones relevantes con bajo nivel de complejidad. Las principales contribuciones de esta tesis pueden separarse en cuatro temáticas, las cuales serán abordadas en los capítulos 5, 6, 7 y 8. La primera se basa en el desarrollo de un algoritmo capaz de aplicarse tanto al problema de aprendizaje multitarea como al de extracción de información con información lateral de teoría de información. Diferentes análisis teóricos y prácticos sobre el mismo se desarrollan en profundidad. La segunda está basada en un vínculo teórico que relaciona el efecto bottleneck con el problema de generalización del aprendizaje estadístico por medio de una cota de confianza sobre la desviación del riesgo empírico. Este resultado es complementado con un estudio experimental, mostrando que el mismo puede ser de suma relevancia cuando la distribución de los datos de entrenamiento y testeo es sutilmente diferente. La tercera se basa en el estudio del desacople existente al entrenar con la entropía cruzada como función costo para minimizar la probabilidad de error. Este desacople también parece estar vinculado con métricas de teoría de información. Por último la cuarta es el estudio del problema del information bottleneck en esquemas distribuidos relevantes en la práctica, pero desde una perspectiva teórica. Un análisis profundo demuestra como la cooperación entre los diferentes nodos donde se almacena la información puede ser ventajosa. Artificial intelligence advances by leaps and bounds. However, this trend could become stagnant if significant progress is not achieved in certain issues, two of which will be studied in this thesis. On the one hand, statistical learning seeks to develop algorithms that not only correctly classify a set of known data, but also that this behavior is generalized to new samples. The ability to generalize algorithms is often addressed with mere disturbances in the learning stage. An intelligent use of such disturbance methods could result in a considerable improvement of the algorithms. On the other hand, information theory seeks to create representations as compressed as possible, without affecting its subsequent use. The amount of data to be stored grows exponentially day by day and efficient methods of information compression become essential in the advancement of these kind of technologies. This thesis addresses the problem of information bottleneck, focusing on the links between statistical learning and information theory. The search for accurate and generalizable representations of statistical learning, such as the extraction of information concentrated on few data from information theory, seem to be two sides of the same coin: the bottleneck between generating relevant representations with a low complexity level The main contributions of this thesis can be separated into four categories, which will be studied in chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8. The first is based on the development of an algorithm capable of applying both the problem of multitasking learning and to finding the fundamental limits of a information theory communication scheme with side information. Different theoretical and practical analyzes on it are developed in depth. The second is based on a theoretical link that relates the bottleneck effect with the generalization problem of statistical learning through a level of confidence about the deviation of empirical risk. This result is complemented by an experimental study, showing that it can be extremely relevant when the distribution of training and testing data is subtly different. The third is based on the study of the decoupling when cross entropy is the training cost function to minimize the error probability. This decoupling also seems to be linked to information theory metrics. Finally, the fourth is the study of the information bottleneck problem in distributed schemes that are relevant in practice, but in a theoretical way. La transición energética ubica al litio como elemento estratégico para la conversión y el almacenamiento de energías limpias en baterías. Los salares de altura en sudamérica con salmueras ricas en litio, constituyen la fuente que impulsa el estudio de nuevos métodos de obtención de litio, alternativos y con posibilidad de acoplamiento a las tecnologías actuales, como los que se desarrollan en esta tesis. Previamente, se realizaron los estudios fundamentales y la prueba de concepto correspondientes a los métodos de extracción de litio. Se desarrollan dos sistemas de obtención de cloruro de litio desde salmuera natural, que utilizan como materiales activos: el óxido de manganeso y litio (LiMn204) y el polipirrol, (PPy). Uno de los sistemas utiliza ambos materiales: "PPy/LiMn204", y el otro únicamente LiMn204 en distintos estados de carga de iones litio: "LiMn204/Li1− xMn204" con 0&lt; x &lt;1. A su vez, ambos sistemas son estudiados en un reactor filtro prensa FM01-LC con electrodos porosos tridimensionales en lecho empacado y por otro lado, el sistema LiMn204/Li1−xMn204 también es estudiado en un reactor de placas paralelas con electrodos porosos planos. Se desarrollan los modelos matemáticos para cada sistema mencionado, estos modelos contemplan fenómenos fisicoquímicos y electroquímicos, como el transporte de masa de las especies químicas en fases líquida y sólida, conservación de la carga, reacciones electroquímicas heterogéneas, proceso de intercalación de iones y proceso de adsorción de doble capa. Los modelos matemáticos son implementados en la plataforma COMSOL Multiphysics® y se realizan simulaciones bajo distintas condiciones de operación. Por la comparación entre resultados experimentales y resultados de simulaciones se realiza la validación de los modelos matemáticos, particularmente a través de dos variables, la concentración de litio en el electrolito de recuperación y el voltaje total del reactor, en función del tiempo. A lo largo de la tesis, se presentan estudios experimentales y estudios teóricos de los sistemas. Los estudios teóricos se realizan a través de las simulaciones y comprenden el estudio de variables como, la velocidad de flujo de electrolitos, el estado de carga inicial de los electrodos, la densidad de corriente aplicada, la relación de masas de material activo y el espesor de los electrodos. Los estudios experimentales comprenden, la capacidad de extracción de los métodos propuestos, la velocidad de captura o extracción de litio, el consumo energético de los métodos, la caída óhmica en el reactor y la relación entre, la densidad de corriente local y el área superficial electroquímica activa. Los estudios teóricos permiten entender la relación entre las variables operativas y la capacidad de obtención de litio del sistema. El objetivo de los estudios teóricos y experimentales es propiciar el escalado de los métodos de obtención de litio de la salmuera The energy transition locates lithium as a strategic element for the conversion and storage of clean energy in batteries. The high-altitude salt flats in South America, with brines rich in lithium, constitute the source that inspires the study of new methods of lithium extraction, alternatives, and the possibility of coupling to current technologies, which are developed in this thesis. The mathematical models for each system mentioned are developed, these models consider physicochemical and electrochemical phenomena, such as mass transport of chemical species in the liquid and solid phase, charge conservation, heterogeneous electrochemical reactions, ion intercalation process, and process double layer adsorption. Previously, the fundamental studies and the proof of concept were realized, which correspond to lithium extraction methods. The thesis develops two electrochemical extraction systems of lithium chloride from natural brine, which uses as active materials: lithium manganese oxide (LiMn204) and polypyrrole (PPy). One of the systems uses both materials: "PPy/LiMn204", and the other uses only LiMn204 in different state of charge of lithium ions: "LiMn204/Li1− xMn204" with 0&lt; x &lt;1. At the same time, both systems are studied in a press filter reactor FM01-LC with three-dimensional porous electrodes in a packed bed, and on the other side, the system LiMn204/Li1−xMn204 is studied in a reactor of parallel plates with planes porous electrodes. Mathematical models are implemented on the COMSOL Multiphysics® platform and simulations are performed under different operating conditions. The validation of mathematical models is realized for the comparison between experimental and simulation results, particularly using two variables, the lithium concentration in the recovery electrolyte and the total voltage of the reactor, as a function of time. Throughout the thesis, experimental and theoretical studies of lithium extraction systems are presented. Theoretical studies are realized with simulations and include the study of variables such as the electrolyte flow rate, the initial state of charge of the electrodes, the applied current density, the active material mass ratio, and the thickness of electrodes. Experimental studies comprise the extraction capacity of the proposed methods, the capture or extraction velocity of lithium, the energy consumption of the methods, the ohmic drop in the reactor, and the relation between the local current density and the electrochemically active surface area. The theoretical studies allow us to understand the relation between the operating variables and the capacity of the system to obtain lithium. The objective of the theoretical and experimental studies is to propitiate the scaling up of methods for obtaining lithium from brines.
