Las estructuras cuyas dimensiones se encuentran en la escala nanométrica poseen propiedades físico-químicas estrechamente relacionadas con su tamaño, forma y morfología y que difieren notablemente de las de su equivalente de mayor tamaño. Esto ha conllevado al estudio intensivo de estos sistemas las últimas décadas, donde se han encontrado propiedades magnificadas e incluso únicas y que han desencadenado avances tecnológicos importantes y el desarrollo de conocimiento en un área que está en la frontera de los fenómenos cuánticos. Una dirección importante en la síntesis de nanopartículas es la expansión a nanoestructuras híbridas conformadas por dominios discretos de diferentes materiales arreglados de manera controlada, conocidas como heteroestructuras y cuyas ventajas incluyen la multifuncionalidad, la generación de nuevas funciones y propiedades mejoradas no disponibles con un solo componente. Tres familias de nanopartículas formadas por un único núcleo de óxido de hierro y cáscaras de sílice amorfa fueron preparadas por métodos químicos. En cada caso, primero se obtuvo un ferrofluido de nanopartículas monodispersas de óxido de hierro cubiertas con ácido oleico, por la descomposición térmica de precursores orgánicos. La cobertura orgánica se aprovechó para promover el intercambio de ligandos en un proceso de microemulsión inversa, permitiendo transferir las partículas a la fase polar, donde ocurre de manera confinada la hidrólisis y condensación de TEOS (Si(OC2H5)4) y se forma una cáscara de SiO2 amorfo sobre cada nanopartícula. Los parámetros de síntesis fueron variados para obtener diferentes tamaños de núcleos y espesores de cáscaras. La transferencia de fase de nanopartículas hidrofóbicas por la formación de una cáscara química y mecánicamente resistente, es una alternativa interesante como primer paso de modificación superficial que permita la creación de estructuras más complejas y funcionales, aprovechando la conocida versatilidad de los compuestos organosilanos. A través de este método se obtienen partículas de tamaño y morfología homogénea, proveyendo un sistema que puede utilizarse como modelo para estudiar fenómenos básicos del magnetismo en la nanoescala. Núcleos de diámetros entre 8 y 13 nm con cáscaras de entre 1 y decenas de nanómetros fueron caracterizadas por difracción de rayos X (DRX), microscopia electrónica (TEM y SEM), y dispersión de rayos X a bajos ángulos (SAXS), confirmando la composición y morfología esperadas y la estabilidad de los coloides. Se llevó a cabo una intensa caracterización magnética, reconociendo la dependencia de los parámetros magnéticos principales con cada distribución de tamaños y las distancias entre núcleos. Todas las variaciones en los parámetros extraídos de la caracterización magnética muestran una dependencia con el inverso de la distancia entre partículas al cubo, permitiendo asociarlos directamente con un aumento en las interacciones dipolares a medida que disminuye el espesor de las cáscaras de sílice. Una frontera entre sistemas interactuantes y no interactuantes es identificada y discutida. The structures whose dimensions are in the nanometric scale display chemical and physical properties closely related to their size, shape and morphology, which markedly differ from their bulk counterpart. This has entailed to the intensive study of these systems over the last decades, finding magnified and even unique properties that have led to important technological advances and the development of knowledge in an area that is on the boundary of quantum phenomena. An important direction in the synthesis of nanostructures was the expansion to hybrid nanostructures conformed by discrete domains of different materials arranged in a controlled fashion, also known as heterostructures, which have shown important advantages as multifunctionality or novel functions unavailable in single component nanostructures. Three families of nanoparticles formed by iron oxide single cores and silica shells were prepared by chemical methods. First, a ferrofluid composed of monodisperse nanoparticles covered with oleic acid was obtained by thermal decomposition of organic precursors. The organic layer in the particles surface was subsequently used to promote the ligand exchange in the inverse microemulsion process, as a result the particles are transferred to the polar phase where confined TEOS (Si(OC2H5)4) hydrolyzation and condensation takes place to form an amorphous SiO2 coating on each nanoparticle. The reaction parameters were varied to obtain different cores sizes and shell thicknesses. Solvent transfer of hydrophobic nanoparticles by the formation of a chemically and mechanically resistant shell is an interesting alternative as a first step of modification that allows the creation of more complex and functional structures taking advantage of the well-known versatility of the organosilane compounds. This method yields homogeneous morphologies and low hydrodynamic radii, providing a core-shell system that can be used as a model to study of basic phenomena of magnetism at the nanoscale. Nanoparticles with cores of radii ranging from 4 to 9 nm and shells from 1 to several nanometers were characterized through X-Ray diffraction (XRD) Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM/TEM), and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) confirming the desired composition, morphology and stability. An intensive magnetic characterization was performed and the dependency of the main magnetic features with the sizes and interparticle distance was identified. All the variations of the obtained parameters from the magnetic characterization show a dependency that goes as the inverse of the distance cubed, according to the expression of dipolar interactions. Hence the effect is attributed to the increase of magnetic interactions with decreasing shell thickness. A frontier between interacting and non-interacting systems is observed and discussed.
