Se presenta una técnica que permite aumentar la precisión en la cuantificación de cantidades reducidas de fluidos en aplicaciones de transporte electroosmótico y dos técnicas de detección óptica con aplicación en biosensado. Estas técnicas intervienen directamente en la automatización de procesos para la cuantificación de un elemento biológico específico o analito usando cantidades muy reducidas de fluidos. En la evolución tecnológica de las plataformas LoC se observa un constante incremento de complejidad requerida tanto en el desarrollo de sistemas de transporte microfluídico, bioreceptores y elementos transductores, como del empleo de técnicas de análisis y procesamiento de señales. En el área de transporte de especies en sistemas microfluídicos, el trabajo de Tesis está dirigido a la introducción de un modelo numérico basado en presiones de Laplace, el cual permite explicar el origen y la dinámica de gradientes de presión adversos indeseados, que pueden reducir e incluso cancelar el flujo, presentes en aplicaciones de transporte electroosmótico con mayor precisión a la alcanzada por modelos previos basados en presión hidrostática. Esto se traduce en un aumento de la precisión en el manejo de cantidades reducidas de fluidos en sistemas de transporte electroosmótico. Con respecto a las técnicas de biosensado que pueden ser implementadas en plataformas tipo LoC, en este trabajo de Tesis se explota el uso de la óptica. Se desarrollan dos abordajes bien diferenciados tanto en forma teórica como experimental: el empleo de un marco de referencia interferométrico de geometría dual basado en detección de fase usando análisis deseñales mediante el empleo de transformadas synchrosqueezing, y la aplicación de sistemas de detección basados en resonadores ópticos circulares del tipo whisperinggallery modes (por sus siglas, WGM). Ambas modalidades son discutidas en forma general utilizando experimentos controlados que se independizan de la naturaleza del elemento biológico. De esta manera los análisis presentados ponen en evidencia los pros y contras de ambas técnicas y marcan un hito de lo que se espera para su futura adaptación en el uso de plataformas tipo LoC. In this Thesis, we investigate and analyze three techniques for the development of Lab-On-a-Chip (LoC) biosensing platforms. We present a technique that allows increasing the handling precision of reduced fluid volumes in electroosmotic transport applications and two biosensing capable optical detection techniques. These techniques directly intervene in the automation of processes for the quantification of a specific biological element or analyte using minimal amounts of fluids. The technological evolution of LoC platforms shows a constant increase in the required complexity both for the development of microfluidic transport systems, bio-receptors and transducer elements, as of the use of analysis and signal processing techniques. Regarding the area of species transport in microfluidic systems, this Thesis is aimed at the introduction of a numerical model, based on Laplace pressures, which explains the origin and dynamics of undesired adverse pressure gradients, that appear in electroosmotic transport applications, which can reduce and even cancel the flow with greater precision than that achieved by previous models based on hydrostatic pressure. This renders in a precision increase in the handling of reduced amounts of fluids in electroosmotic transport systems. Regarding the biosensing techniques that can be implemented in LoC platforms, in this Thesis, we make use of optics. Two approaches are developed, differentiated both theoretically and experimentally: (1) the use of a dual-geometry interferometric reference framework based on phase detection employing signal analysis through the use of synchrosqueezing transforms, and (2) the application of detection systems based on whispering-gallery modes optical microresonators (for short, WGM). Both methods are discussed in a general way using controlled experiments independent of the biological element nature. In this way, the presented analyzes highlight the pros and cons of both techniques and mark a milestone towards its future adaptation in LoC platforms. En el presente trabajo de Tesis Doctoral se realizó el desarrollo y análisis de modelos de respuesta dieléctrica y magnética en materiales cerámicos ferrimagnéticos y en metamateriales con el fin de evaluar propiedades y su posterior aplicación tecnológica. El grupo de investigación en el cual se realizó este trabajo de tesis cuenta con una amplia experiencia tanto en el campo experimental como teórico en el estudio de propiedades electromagnéticas de materiales cerámicos y su interacción con la radiación electromagnética. En el Capítulo 1 se presentan los Fundamentos de la Teoría Electromagnética aplicando el Sistema Internacional de Unidades (SI), y también la nomenclatura utilizada en Ingeniería Electromagnética. En el Capítulo 2 se estudian los medios dieléctricos y magnéticos convencionales y se proponen modelos matemáticos de permitividad eléctrica y permeabilidad magnética en los mismos. Existen en la actualidad varios modelos de permitividad eléctrica en materiales convencionales sometidos a campos electromagnéticos, el modelo más conocido, que se presenta en esta tesis es el modelo de Debye, en el que la suposición fundamental es un tiempo finito de relajación, también se presenta un apartamiento común del modelo de Debye, el denominado modelo de Davidson – Cole. Respecto a la respuesta magnética el modelo de permeabilidad magnética en ferritas que se desarrolla en esta tesis contempla dos mecanismos de magnetización. El primero se refiere al desplazamiento de la pared de los dominios, siendo los campos externos los responsables del desplazamiento de la pared de dichos dominios. El otro mecanismo de magnetización es el momento angular intrínseco del electrón o spin. Al final del capítulo se realiza un desarrollo teórico del principio de causalidad de los sistemas físicos con el objeto de verificar la causalidad de los modelos anteriores . Un sistema lineal es causal si la salida no anticipa valores futuros de la entrada. La causalidad en un sistema físico lineal se analiza por medio de las relaciones de Kramers Kronig. En el capítulo 3 se introduce el tema de los metamateriales. Materiales construidos por el hombre en los que la propagación Electromagnética es de tal forma que los vectores campo eléctrico E, campo magnético H y el vector de propagación k forman una tríada de la mano izquierda (LH), mientras que los materiales convencionales forman una tríada de la mano derecha (RH). Se presentan sus principales características, entre ellas la permitividad eléctrica y permeabilidad magnética simultaneamente negativas en cierto rango de frecuencias lo que indica un índice de refracción negativo. En el capítulo 4 se muestran los resultados de la simulación de la permeabilidad magnética en ferritas aplicando un algoritmo de optimización. Se aplicó el método de los Algoritmos genéticos para el ajuste numérico de los coeficientes en el modelo de permeabilidad magnética en función de la frecuencia para diversas ferritas de NiZn dopadas con Ytrio Rutenio y Galadinia. Se utilizaron datos experimentales obtenidos en el laboratorio LAFMACEL de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (FIUBA). Se verificó la causalidad del modelo con los coeficientes obtenidos simulando las relaciones de Kramers Kronig sobre modelo. En el capítulo 5 se presenta un modelo de permitividad eléctrica en metamateriales. Así mismo, se simuló la permitividad eléctrica efectiva de un metamaterial en función de la frecuencia para distintas geometrías del sistema. Se aplicó el método de Modelos de líneas de transmisión (TLM) para simular el campo eléctrico dentro del material. Al final del capítulo se describen dos prototipos de metamateriales construidos por la tesista en colaboración con los integrantes del laboratorio de radiación de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la UBA y la aplicación de los mismos en blindajes de ondas electromagnéticas. Se evaluó experimentalmente la eficiencia de blindaje de los distintos prototipos. En el capítulo 6 se estudió la respuesta numérica de un modelo de permeabilidad magnética efectiva de un metamaterial modificando la geometría de la estructura. Se realizó la simulación del material mediante el método diferencias finitas en el dominio del tiempo (FDTD) y se verificó la causalidad del mismo. This Doctoral Thesis presents the development and analysis of dielectric and magnetic response models in ferrimagnetic and metamaterial ceramic materials that were performed in order to evaluate their properties and subsequent technological application. The Research Group in which this thesis has been carried out has wide experience, both experimental and theoretical, in the field of electromagnetic properties of ceramic materials and their interaction with electromagnetic radiation. Chapter 1 presents the Fundamentals of Electromagnetic Theory by applying the International System of Units (SI), as well as the nomenclature used in Electromagnetic Engineering. Chapter 2 describes conventional dielectric and magnetic media and proposes mathematical models of their electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability. Currently, there are several models of electrical permittivity in conventional materials subjected to electromagnetic fields. The best-known model presented in this thesis is the Debye Model, in which the fundamental assumption is the existence of a finite relaxation time. There also exists a common deviation from the Debye model, the so-called Davidson-Cole model. With regard to the magnetic response, the model of magnetic permeability in ferrites developed in this thesis considers two magnetization mechanisms. The first concerns the displacement of the wall of domains, being the external fields responsible for their movement. The other magnetization mechanism is the intrinsic angular momentum of the electron or spin. At the end of the chapter, the theoretical development of the principle of causality of physical systems is carried out in order to verify the causality of the presented models. A linear system is causal if the output does not anticipate future input values. Causality in a linear physical system is analyzed by the Kramers Kronig’s relations. Chapter 3 introduces the topic of Metamaterials. They are man-made materials in which the Electromagnetic propagation is such that electric field E, magnetic field H, and propagation k vectors form a left-hand triad (LH), while in conventional materials they form a right hand (RH) triad. Their main characteristics are presented, among them the simultaneously negative electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability in a certain frequency range, which indicates a negative refractive index. Chapter 4 shows the results of the simulation of magnetic permeability in ferrites applying an optimization algorithm. The Genetic Algorithms method was applied for the numerical adjustment of coefficients as functions of frequency in the magnetic permeability model for various NiZn ferrites doped with Yttrium Ruthenium and Galadinia. Experimental data obtained in the LAFMACEL laboratory of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Buenos Aires (FIUBA), were used. The causality of the model was verified with the coefficients obtained by simulating the Kramers Kronig relation on the model. Chapter 5 presents a model of electrical permittivity in metamaterials. The effective electrical permittivity of a metamaterial was simulated as a function of frequency for different geometries of the system. The Transmission Line Models (TLM) method was applied to simulate the electric field within the material. At the end of the chapter, two metamaterial prototypes built in this thesis in collaboration with members of the FIUBA Radiation Laboratory and their application to shielding electromagnetic waves are described. The shielding efficiency of the different prototypes was experimentally evaluated. Chapter 6 presents results for the numerical response of an effective magnetic permeability model of a metamaterial by modifying the geometry of the structure. La técnica de espectro ensanchado de tipo chirp, o en inglés Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) describe un tipo de modulación para comunicaciones inalámbricas que resulta de interés actual debido a su reciente adopción en el campo de la internet de las cosas, mejor conocido como IoT. La principal responsable es LoRa, una tecnología que ha cobrado protagonismo en los últimos años y que pertenece a la categoría de redes WAN de baja potencia (LPWANs o Low Power Wide Area Networks). LoRa utiliza una modulación propietaria de tipo CSS para transmitir a velocidades de transferencia de datos bajas y adaptables según la sensibilidad requerida en el receptor. Promete comunicaciones robustas y seguras a kilómetros de distancia y con muy bajo consumo energético y costos de despliegue al beneficiarse de la robustez inherente de la señal chirp de banda ancha ante ciertos tipos de interferencia. La presente tesis tiene como objeto el diseño e implementación de un transreceptor inalámbrico con modulación CSS basada en la que usa LoRa. La solución presentada se encara como un sistema de radio definida por software o SDR, el cual se conforma por un Front-End analógico y un procesador digital en banda base (DBBP por las siglas en inglés de Digital Base-Band Processor). Para el diseño del DBBP se elige un hardware que permite la implementación de lógica programable como una FPGA (siglas de Field Programmable Gate Array) para el tratamiento de las señales de radio, junto a una unidad de procesamiento que permite la cofiguración y control integral del sistema. Se utiliza por lo tanto un dispositivo de la familia Zynq-7000 de Xilinx que integra un procesador ARM Cortex-A9 embebido con lógica programable en el mismo silicio, lo que permite el diseño de aplicaciones que requieren la velocidad que ofrece el hardware programable así como la versatilidad de un procesador al mismo tiempo. El sistema DBBP diseñado se pone a prueba utilizando un kit de desarrollo con diversas interfaces de comunicación para acelerar la implementación y poner a prueba el sistema desarrollado frente a varias condiciones de interferencia demostrando las bondades de la modulación CSS. Esta tesis se centra únicamente en las etapas de procesamiento digital, dejando para un trabajo futuro la integracióncon un Front-End analógico que permita realizar pruebas en entornos reales.
