En la década del 90 se desarrollaron los primeros output-only models, metodologías que trabajan únicamente con la medición de la respuesta.La gran ventaja de estos métodos es que permiten obtener los parámetros modales sin requerir una excitación impuesta, es suficiente con la medición de la vibración ambiente. Es por ello que estos métodos se engloban bajo el término de operational modal analysis (análisis modal operacional) u OMA, midiendo la respuesta de la estructura durante su estado normal de servicio (“operación”) se obtienen los parámetros buscados. Existen dos grandes corrientes respecto a la forma de implementar estos métodos: los que trabajan en el dominio del tiempo, y los que trabajan en el dominio de la frecuencia. En términos generales, los métodos en el dominio del tiempo trabajan ajustando la respuesta a partir de las correlaciones entre señales, mientras que los métodos en el dominio de la frecuencia utilizan las densidades de potencia espectral. Recordando que la relación entre ambas es la Transformada de Fourier, la información que manejan es la misma, pero representada de distinta forma.
