En esta Tesis, se propone el uso de polidimetilsiloxano (PDMS) en lentes axicónicas de campo estrecho, adecuadas para neuroestimulación transcraneal mediante ultrasonido pulsado de baja frecuencia y baja intensidad. Se realizó una caracterización, tanto numérica como experimental, del campo acústico de una lente axicónica, con un ángulo de 144º y 14 mm de radio acoplada a un transductor convencional (no enfocado) del mismo radio. La resolución lateral y axial a través del cráneo fue de 5 mm y 18 mm, respectivamente, comparable a la resolución espacial que exhiben los transductores de segmento esférico, pero con una distancia focal 7 veces menor, en promedio, al ser suprimido por la lente el campo cercano del transductor. Sin embargo, para que una lente axicónica posea dicha resolución y control focal es necesario ajustar la separación entre el transductor y la lente de manera óptima. Se modeló la propagación del ultrasonido, mediante un método pseudoespectral, a través del sistema de la lente para una frecuencia de 0,5 MHz. Se midieron las propiedades de los materiales y se modeló la geometría de la lente para diferentes ángulos. Las mediciones se realizaron mediante barridos de trama bidimensionales con un hidrófono en agua desionizada, en condiciones de campo libre y a través del cráneo. Se obtuvo un modelo de diseño que tiene en cuenta la separación óptima entre el transductor y la lente, en función de la distancia focal normalizada, mediante fórmulas relativamente simples. El cráneo no resultó ser un obstáculo para enfocar el ultrasonido con lentes axicónicas. El abordaje propuesto permitió mejorar la resolución espacial lateral de la lente en hasta un 50% y proporciona una forma completa para el diseño de ventanas craneales utilizando lentes axicónicas basadas en PDMS. In this Thesis, the use of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is proposed in axicon lenses with narrow depth of field, suitable for transcranial neurostimulation by means of low-frequency and low-intensity pulsed ultrasound. A characterization, both numerical and experimental, of the acoustic field of an axicon lens was carried out, with an angle of 144º and 14 mm of radius coupled to a conventional transducer (not focused) of the same radius. The lateral and axial resolution through the skull were 5 mm and 18 mm, respectively, comparable to the spatial resolution exhibited by spherical segment transducers, but with a focal length 7 times shorter, on average, as the lens suppressed the near field of the transducer. However, for an axicon lens to have such resolution and focal control it is necessary to adjust the separation between the transducer and axicon lens, called stand-off, optimally. The propagation of ultrasound was modeled, by a pseudospectral method, through the lens system for a frequency of 0.5 MHz. The properties of the materials were measured and the geometry of the lens was modeled for different angles. Measurements were made by two-dimensional raster scans with a hydrophone in deionized water, under free-field conditions and through the skull. A design model that takes into account the optimal stand-off, as a function of the normalized focal length, was obtained using relatively simple formulas. The skull did not prove to be an obstacle to focusing the ultrasound with axicon lenses. The proposed approach allowed to improve the lateral spatial resolution of the lens by up to 50% and provides a complete guideline for the design of cranial windows using PDMS-based axicon lenses. La necesidad de detectar señales, recuperar información útil a partir de éstas, realizar clasificaciones y tomar decisiones es un problema presente en muchas aplicaciones de procesamiento de señales. Dado que en la práctica las señales se ven corrompidas por el ruido, es esencial optimizar el procesamiento y la clasificación de las señales para garantizar una toma de decisiones correcta. En esta tesis se analiza el modelo de una mezcla de exponenciales complejas amortiguadas. Un obstáculo importante es el de determinar el número de componentes en la mezcla y, para cada componente, el valor de la frecuencia, factor de amortiguación, la amplitud y la fase del modelo. El trabajo se centrará específicamente en el problema de estimación de la cantidad de exponenciales presentes, así como también en la estabilidad numérica de las soluciones obtenidas por diferentes algoritmos de estimación de los parámetros. Esto es especialmente difícil si uno o más componentes están cerca entre sí y/o presentan una energía comparable o menor frente a una perturbación. Para la estimación de la cantidad de componentes en la mezcla se analizan las ventajas y desventajas de los métodos existentes de manera de proponer una nueva estrategia de estimación que mejore significativamente el rendimiento. Para el caso de la estabilidad numérica se extienden los resultados conocidos, así como también se propone una nueva estrategia para poder obtener mejores estimaciones de las componentes de la mezcla de exponenciales. Se propone una estrategia alternativa de clasificación de señales exponenciales basada en el rango numérico de un haz matricial. Este problema de dispersión electromagnética se puede modelar como una suma de exponenciales complejas donde las frecuencias son características propias del material. Por lo tanto, se propone utilizar los nuevos métodos aquí propuestos debido a que la estimación correcta de las frecuencias complejas en la señal reflejada se vuelve relevante tanto para la identificación y/o clasificación del material. Todos los métodos propuestos son validados usando experimentos numéricos y comparando su desempeño con resultados obtenidos en la literatura. También se validarán utilizando simulaciones de dispersión electromagnética como datos experimentales para diferentes materiales dieléctricos. The need to detect signals, recover useful information from them, perform classifications, and make decisions is a common issue in many signal processing applications. Since signals in practice are corrupted by noise, it is essential to optimize the processing and classification of the signals to ensure accurate decision-making. This thesis analyzes the model of a mixture of damped complex exponentials. A significant challenge is determining the number of components in the mixture and, for each component, the values of frequency, damping factor, amplitude, and phase of the model. The focus will be specifically on the problem of estimating the number of present exponentials, as well as on the numerical stability of the solutions obtained by different parameter estimation algorithms. This is particularly difficult when one or more components are close to each other and/or exhibit comparable or lower energy in the presence of perturbations. To estimate the number of components in the mixture, the advantages and disadvantages of existing methods are analyzed to propose a new estimation strategy that significantly improves performance. For numerical stability, known results are extended, and a new strategy is proposed to obtain better estimates of the components of the exponential mixture. An alternative strategy for classifying exponential signals based on the numerical range of a matrix pencil is proposed. This electromagnetic scattering problem can be modeled as a sum of complex exponentials where the frequencies are material-specific characteristics. Therefore, the proposed new methods are recommended because accurate estimation of the complex frequencies in the reflected signal is crucial for both material identification and/or classification. All proposed methods are validated using numerical experiments and compared with results obtained from the literature. They will also be validated using electromagnetic scattering simulations as experimental data for different dielectric materials.
