La extensión universitaria es un proceso comunicacional que comprende un conjunto heterogéneo de acciones: la divulgación científica y cultural, la promoción social y comunitaria, la capacitación de los propios actores universitarios y los servicios a terceros, entre otros. Según la clasificación propuesta por el ingeniero Gustavo Menéndez, de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral, existen tres categorías básicas dentro de la extensión universitaria, correspondientes a su vez a tres modelos distintos de
universidad: a) la derivada de la universidad reformista, que comprende dos sub-categorías: la extensión dirigida a la difusión cultural y la orientada hacia la transformación social; b) el modelo de los Land Grant Colleges de los Estados Unidos, centrado en las pymes y el desarrollo económico y c) el modelo de universidad elitista, dirigido hacia la formación de líderes y cuadros políticos. En la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) el Departamento de Extensión, actualmente Secretaría de Extensión Universitaria y Bienestar Estudiantil, fue creado en 1956. Sus primeras acciones fueron proyectos sobre mejoras en las condiciones de vida de poblaciones marginales y acceso a viviendas dignas para los sectores menos favorecidos económicamente. Un hito importante en la historia de la extensión en la UBA lo constituyen los proyectos UBANEX, creados para fortalecer las tareas de extensión llevadas a cabo en las distintas unidades académicas a los efectos de promover, estimular y fortalecer la vinculación de la universidad con la sociedad. Actualmente han culminado los proyectos correspondientes al décimo llamado de este programa, y han comenzado los correspondientes al undécimo llamado. El objetivo del presente trabajo es enmarcar los proyectos UBANEX llevados a cabo en la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (FIUBA) dentro de las categorías correspondientes, a partir de la clasificación previamente descripta. Se busca detectar las tendencias básicas seguidas por estos proyectos de extensión universitaria en FIUBA, a fin de definir las características esenciales adquiridas por la extensión en la Facultad de Ingeniería. En particular, se presenta a la extensión universitaria como una alternativa viable para la difusión de la ciencia y la tecnología en distintos estamentos de la población.

El presente trabajo de tesis analiza diferentes aspectos de la dinámica de una suspensión de partículas sometida a una vibración vertical. En las condiciones de trabajo, las partículas, más pesadas que el líquido en el que están dispersas (líquido portador), forman un lecho en el fondo del recipiente o sustrato. La capa de líquido que sobrenada el lecho de partículas está en contacto también con las paredes laterales del recipiente y con el aire (superficie libre). Para estudiar la interacción entre el líquido portador, las partículas y el recipiente, utilizamos un abordaje progresivo en cuanto a la complejidad del sistema en estudio, que considera primero el caso de una capa de líquido puro que sobrenada a un sustrato rugoso y permeable que imita un lecho consolidado de partículas, para luego analizar el caso de un lecho no consolidado, en el cual, en principio, la dinámica de las partículas y del líquido están acopladas. Se emplearon técnicas de visualización y fotométricas para determinar la naturaleza de las estructuras de flujo en forma de ondas en la capa de líquido, su correlación con los patrones que se observan en el lecho de partículas, y las condiciones asociadas a la iniciación de movimiento y eventual resuspensión de las mismas. En el primer modelo experimental, se utilizaron como sustratos mallas metálicas de diferentes texturas, que se emplearon de dos maneras: sin modificar (abiertas), o selladas con una pintura impermeable. La variación en la textura y el sellado de las mallas permitió alterar la rugosidad y permeabilidad del sustrato, estudiándose su influencia en la aceleración umbral r c, y en la longitud de onda Aw, de la inestabilidad de Faraday que se presenta en forma de ondas en la capa de líquido sobrenadante. Como resultado principal se encontró que r c es mayor en presencia de una malla que para un sustrato liso, notablemente, tanto para mallas abiertas como para las selladas. Se comparan los resultados con predicciones de una teoría lineal para un sustrato liso. Se estimó un espesor efectivo de la capa líquida que depende de las características de las mallas Los otros dos modelos experimentales buscaron estudiar la interacción entre las ondas en la superficie del líquido sobrenadante y el lecho no consolidado de partículas, con el interés tecnológico asociado a la técnica de plantillas líquidas. Ambos estudiaron aspectos complementarios: El segundo, utilizando un recipiente cilíndrico y observación cenital, permitió determinar la naturaleza y características de las ondas en la capa de líquido sobrenadante y su relación con los patrones formados en el lecho de partículas. En las condiciones experimentales utilizadas, las ondas en el líquido son ondas capilares, de naturaleza armónica. Su longitud de onda característica, Aw, determinada por la frecuencia de vibración f, muestra correlación con la del lecho de partículas, Ap, que se presenta como una sucesión de crestas y valles en la dirección radial, formando anillos concéntricos. Se analizó cómo la rugosidad del lecho depende del número de Shields 0, que cuantifica la cizalla actuante sobre el lecho de partículas, encontrándose una dependencia cuadrática, con un cierto valor umbral. El tercer modelo permitió la observación en vista de corte de un recipiente estrecho (configuración cuasi-2D). Por encima de la aceleración crítica r c , y dependiendo de la frecuencia de excitación f, aparecen ondas de Faraday en la capa de líquido que sobrenada al lecho de partículas. Se estudió la dependencia de r c con la frecuencia de vibración f y con el espesor de la capa de líquido sobrenadante Ah. Por otro lado, se caracterizaron tres regímenes (a,b,c) de comportamiento del lecho de partículas a medida que disminuye Ah, en los cuales:
(a) Las partículas están en reposo formando un lecho plano
(b) Se movilizan debido a su interacción con las ondas en la superficie del líquido, generando una rugosidad de forma periódica en el lecho.
(c) Comienzan a resuspenderse
La transición entre estos regímenes depende de f pero no del radio a de la partícula. Para el régimen (b), se correlacionó la longitud Aw y la altura h w de las ondas en el líquido con la longitud Ap y la altura característica del lecho de partículas Ahp. Los resultados obtenidos aportan elementos para caracterizar la interacción entre las partículas, las estructuras de flujo en el líquido portador y el recipiente. The present thesis analyses different aspects of the dynamics of particle suspensions subjected to vertical vibration. In the working conditions, the particles, heavier than the liquid in which they are dispersed (carrier fluid), form a bed at the bottom of the container (substrate). The layer of liquid over the bed of particles is also in contact with the side walls of the container and with air (free surface) In order to study the interaction between the carrier liquid, the particles and the container, we use a progressive approach in terms of the complexity of the system under study, which first considers the case of a layer of pure liquid over a rough and permeable substrate that imitates a consolidated bed of particles, and then analyses the case of an unconsolidated bed, in which, in principle, the dynamics of the particles and the liquid are coupled. Visualisation and photometric techniques were used to determine the nature of the wavelike flow structures in the liquid layer, their correlation with the patterns observed in the particle bed, and the conditions associated with the initiation of movement and eventual resuspension of the particles.
In the first experimental model, metal meshes of different textures were used as substrates, which were used in two ways: unmodified (open), or sealed with an impermeable paint. The variation in the texture and the sealing of the meshes allowed the roughness and permeability of the substrate to be altered, studying their influence on the threshold acceleration r c, and on the wavelength Aw, of Faraday’s instability which is presented in the form of waves in the supernatant liquid layer. As a main result, it was found that r c is greater in the presence of a mesh than for a smooth substrate, notably for both open and sealed meshes. The results are compared with predictions from a linear theory for a smooth substrate. An effective thickness of the liquid layer was estimated, which depends on the characteristics of the meshes. The other two experimental models sought to study the interaction between waves on the surface of the supernatant liquid and the unconsolidated bed of particles, with the technological interest associated with the liquid template technique. Both studied complementary aspects: The second, using a cylindrical vessel and zenithal observation, made it possible to determine, the nature and characteristics of the waves in the supernatant liquid layer and their relationship with the patterns formed in the particle bed. In the experimental conditions used, the waves in the liquid are capillary waves, of a harmonic nature. Their characteristic wavelength, Aw, determined by the vibration frequency f , shows correlation with that of the particle bed, Ap, which appears as a succession of ridges and valleys in the radial direction, forming concentric rings. We analysed how the roughness of the bed depends on the number of Shields 0 , which quantifies the shear acting on the particle bed, finding a quadratic dependence, with a certain threshold value The third model made it possible to observe, in cut view, of a narrow vessel (quasi-2D configuration). Above the critical acceleration r c, and depending on the excitation frequency f , Faraday waves appear in the liquid layer overlying the particle bed. The dependence of r c on the vibration frequency f and on the thickness of the supernatant liquid layer Ah was studied. On the other hand, three regimes (a,b,c) of particle bed behaviour as Ah decreases were characterised, in which:
(a) Particles are at rest, forming a plane bed
(b) Particles mobilise due to their interaction with the waves on the surface of the liquid, generating a periodic roughness in the bed.
(c) Particles begin to resuspend. The transition between these regimes depends on f , but not on the a radius of the particle. For regime (b), the length Aw and height hw of the waves in the liquid were correlated with the length Ap and the characteristic height of the particle bed A hp. The obtained results provide elements to characterise the interaction between the particles, the flow structures in the carrier liquid and the vessel. Also, they constitute a contribution regarding the perspectives of technological applications, such as those associated with the liquid template technique.

Los lentes de contacto inteligentes prometen ser un reemplazo a los métodos convencionales de análisis sobre pacientes diabéticos, facilitando su evaluación y seguimiento. Sensando a partir del lagrimeo en vez de la sangre, es posible obtener datos en tiempo real sobre los niveles de glucosa de una persona. El objetivo de este trabajo se centra en el diseño de un sistema que permita brindar energía suficiente para el correcto funcionamiento, pero considerando las posibles injerencias que esto puede tener sobre el ojo humano. Se diseñan y analizan las antenas involucradas en la transmisión para alimentar al circuito de análisis y en la recepción ubicada en el lente de contacto. La potencia necesaria para activar los circuitos embebidos en el lente de contacto, pero sin superar los l ́ımites de radiación sobre el ojo minimizando las pérdidas en las antenas, serán los focos del trabajo.

La problemática medioambiental ha reavivado el interés por el empleo de hidrógeno como vector energético para aplicaciones vehiculares, mediante su conversión electroquímica en celdas de combustible. La principal vía para la producción de H2 es la reacción de reformado de metano con vapor (MSR), seguida de la reacción de water-gas shift (WGS) que reduce el contenido de CO. Sin embargo, industrialmente estas reacciones se llevan a cabo a temperaturas y presiones elevadas y tienen costos muy altos. El uso de hidrógeno como combustible requiere el desarrollo de nuevos catalizadores capaces de llevar a cabo las reacciones bajo condiciones moderadas, a los fines de lograr la producción económicamente competitiva de H2. En este sentido, trabajos experimentales recientes han mostrado el comportamiento promisorio de catalizadores basados en níquel soportado sobre óxido de cerio (CeO2) dopado con metales de transición o lantánidos. En esta tesis se llevó a cabo un estudio de primeros principios del sistema Ni/CeO2 como catalizador para las reacciones de MSR y WGS. Se emplearon cálculos DFT, modelos microcinéticos y métodos de termodinámica estadística para investigar los mecanismos de reacción y el impacto del dopado del soporte y/o la aleación de la fase níquel en la actividad y selectividad de esas reacciones, desde una perspectiva atomística. En el Capítulo 1 se introduce la problemática que motiva esta investigación. En el Capítulo 2 se describe la teoría en la que se enmarcan los métodos computacionales empleados en esta tesis. En los capítulos siguientes se exponen los resultados del estudio. Los Capítulos 3 y 4 están dedicados al estudio del soporte de óxido de cerio, analizándose su dopado y reactividad. Puntualmente, en el Capítulo 3 se presenta un estudio teórico del dopado con Pr y su efecto en la reactividad superficial, y en el Capítulo 4 se analiza la resistencia del óxido de cerio al envenenamiento con azufre. Por otro lado, los Capítulos 5 y 6 se enfocan en el estudio de las reacciones de interés sobre el sistema Ni/CeO2. En el Capítulo 5 se estudia la reacción de water-gas shift, investigando por un lado el mecanismo de reacción detallado sobre el soporte de CeO2 y por otro lado el impacto en la selectividad de la incorporación de Cu en la fase Ni. Asimismo, en el Capítulo 6 se pone el foco en la reacción de reformado de metano con vapor, presentando el mecanismo de reacción e identificando el efecto del dopado del soporte con Zr. Finalmente, en el Capítulo 7 se presentan las conclusiones generales y perspectivas de esta tesis.
Current environmental concerns have renewed the interest in the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier for automotive applications, through its electrochemical conversion in fuel cells. The main route for H2 production is the methane steam reforming reaction (MSR), followed by the water-gas shift reaction (WGS), which reduces the content of CO. However, these reactions are carried out industrially at very high temperature and pressure, resulting in elevated operating costs. The use of H2 as a fuel requires the development of novel catalysts capable of carrying out the reactions at milder conditions, to achieve the economically competitive production of H2. In this sense, several recent experimental works have reported promising catalytic performance for nickel supported on CeO2 (ceria)-doped with transition metals or rare earths. In this thesis, a first-principles study of the MSR and WGS reactions over Ni/CeO2 catalysts is presented. DFT calculations, microkinetic modelling and statistical thermodynamics were employed to investigate the mechanisms governing these reactions and to examine the impact of the doping of the support and/or the alloying of nickel in the activity and selectivity of the reactions, offering an atomistic perspective of the catalyst’s behavior and properties. Chapter 1 introduces the problematic that motivates this work. Chapter 2 describes the theory behind the computational methods employed. The subsequent chapters present the results of the study. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to pristine cerium oxide as an active support, analyzing its doping and reactivity. Chapter 3 presents a study of Pr-doping and its effect on the surface reactivity, whereas Chapter 4 shows an analysis of CeO2 resistance towards sulfur poisoning. On the other hand, Chapters 5 and 6 are focused on the study of the reactions of interest over Ni/CeO2 catalysts. Chapter 5 presents a study of the WGS reaction, describing the reaction mechanism on the CeO2 support and the impact of Ni-Cu alloying on its selectivity. Similarly, Chapter 6 puts the focus on the MSR reaction, presenting a complete reaction mechanism and identifying the effect of Zr-doping. Finally, Chapter 7 summarizes the main conclusions and perspectives of this thesis.

Los Sistemas Ciber-Físicos (SCF) integran los dominios físico y algorítmico para los que se debe controlar el cumplimiento de la calidad de operación tanto sobre procesos físicos como cibernéticos (computacionales) que se afectan mutuamente. Se trata de sistemas híbridos, cuyas dinámicas principales requieren representaciones formales como sistemas continuos, de tiempo discreto y/o de eventos discretos.
En los SCFs debe garantizarse una calidad de operación integral aun en ambientes de operación impredecibles. Aplicaciones como los vehículos aéreos no tripulados (VANT) pueden sufrir consecuencias catastróficas si la calidad del control de la dinámica física es ineficiente. Si además consideramos que la misión de un VANT es realizar procesamiento de datos durante un vuelo, un control ineficiente de la calidad de servicio del software abordo puede conllevar el fracaso de una misión completa. En contextos de recursos computacionales escasos, siendo las plataformas robóticas un ejemplo paradigmático, la adjudicación dinámica y eficiente de recursos a distintos controladores se torna un aspecto central. Es deseable, entonces, dotar al SCF de capacidades auto adaptivas mediante controladores cooperativos. Por ejemplo, la estabilidad de vuelo puede verse temporalmente relajada en pos de la eficiencia de un protocolo de comunicación, y viceversa. Este es el campo de acción de los controladores híbridos, que buscan satisfacer objetivos de control múltiples en sistemas modelados mediante dinámicas continuas (e.g. ecuaciones diferenciales) y dinámicas discretas (e.g. máquinas de estados). Actualmente no existe una teoría clara y unificada que permita diseñar controladores híbridos bajo un mismo marco de análisis, permitiendo capturar la interacción entre requerimientos físicos y computacionales. Esto exige procesos de diseño de controladores heterogéneos bajo una plataforma unificada. La ingeniería de modelado y simulación puede ofrecer el marco necesario para facilitar la interconexión robusta de componentes híbridos.
En esta Tesis desarrollamos nuevas herramientas para modelado, simulación y validación de controladores híbridos para SCFs con capacidad de satisfacerrequisitos de asignación dinámica de recursos. Adoptamos el formalismo DEVS (por Especificación de Sistemas de Eventos Discretos) de modelado y simulación que permite expresar de manera exacta cualquier sistema discreto y aproximar sistemas continuos con cualquier grado de precisión deseado, obteniendo modelos híbridos con garantías de correctitud de simulación. Luego proponemos una metodología de diseño basada en continuidad de modelos. Esto permite desarrollar algoritmos de control en forma de modelos de simulación DEVS que se preservan y refinan durante el ciclo de desarrollo incluyendo su despliegue final en robots, donde operan en modalidad hardwarein- the-loop. Asimismo, proponemos nuevos controladores supervisorios, híbridos y jerárquicos, que ofrecen garantías de calidad de servicio integral en robots tipo VANT donde controladores de vuelo y de sistemas de software compiten por recursos escasos. Los casos de estudio incluyen experimentación de campo con vehículos tipo multirotor, avión de ala fija y plataforma deslizante.
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) integrate the physical and algorithmic domains for which compliance of the quality of operation must be controlled both on physical and cybernetic processes that influence each other. They are hybrid systems, whose main dynamics require formal representations as continuous, discrete time and/or discrete event systems. For CPSs, a comprehensive quality of operation must be guaranteed even in unpredictable operating environments. For instance, applications such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can suffer catastrophic consequences if the quality of control of the physical dynamics is inefficient. If we also consider that the mission of a UAV involves data processing during the flight, a poor control of the quality of service of the software on-board can lead to the failure of a whole mission. The context tends to be one of scarce computational resources, with robotic platforms being a paradigmatic example, where the dynamic and efficient allocation of resources to different controllers becomes a central aspect. Therefore, it becomes desirable to provide the CPS with self-adaptive capabilities through cooperative controllers. For example, flight stability can be temporarily relaxed in favor of the efficiency of a communication protocol, and vice versa. This is the field of action of hybrid controllers, which seek to satisfy multiple control objectives in systems modeled by continuous dynamics (e.g. differential equations) and discrete dynamics (e.g. state machines). Currently there is no clear and unified theory that allows the design of hybrid controllers under the same analysis framework, allowing to capture the interaction between physical and computational requirements. This calls for heterogeneous controller design processes under a unified platform. Modeling and simulation engineering can provide the necessary framework to facilitate the robust interconnection of hybrid components. In this Thesis we develop new tools for modeling, simulation and validation of hybrid controllers for CPS with the ability to satisfy dynamic resource allocation requirements. We adopt the DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) modeling and simulation formalism that allows us to represent exactly any discrete system and to approximate continuous systems with any desired accuracy level, thus obtaining hybrid models with guarantees of simulation correctness. Then we propose a design methodology based on model continuity. This allows to develop control algorithms in the form of DEVS simulation models that are preserved and refined during the development cycle including their final deployment in robots, where they operate in hardware-in-the-loop mode. We also introduce new supervisory, hybrid and hierarchical controllers, which offer comprehensive service quality guarantees in UAV-type robots where flight controllers and software systems compete for scarce resources. The case studies include field experimentation with multirotor vehicles, fixed-wing aircraft, and an hovercraft robot.
