En este trabajo de investigación se desarrollaron materiales basados en CeO2 nanoestructurado y se estudió su actividad catalítica y electrocatalítica, a temperatura intermedia (500-750 ?C), para su posible aplicación como ánodos de celdas de combustible de óxi�do sólido de temperatura intermedia (Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, IT-SOFCs). Se sintetizaron materiales de ánodo altamente activos para la oxidación del combustible con conductividad iónica y electrónica, propiedades fundamentales para garantizar el buen funcionamiento de la celda. Se siguieron dos estrategias para mejorar el funcionamiento de los ánodos que actualmente se están desarrollando. En primer lugar, se propuso la sustitución parcial del ZrO2 por Sc2O3 en la red del material CeO2-ZrO2 sintetizando materiales con la siguiente composición: Ce0,9ScxZr1 –xO2 –d con 0 = x = 0,1. El objetivo de dicha sustitución fue el de agregar un dopante aliovalente a la red del óxido mixto de CeO2-ZrO2 para, de esta manera, favorecer la conductividad iónica en el material mediante la generación de vacancias dentro de la red cristalina y así mejorar la actividad catalítica para la oxidación del metano. En segundo lugar, se estudiaron materiales compuestos óxidos de metal-cerámicos (composites) basados en CuO-NiO/CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3 y Fe2O3-NiO/CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3. El objetivo fue sustituir parcialmente el NiO por CuO o Fe2O3 de manera tal de mejorar la resistencia a la formación de carbono en los ánodos en presencia de un combustible con carbono en su composición. Este trabajo está organizado en ocho capítulos: En el primer capítulo se presenta una introducción al tema y se exponen las principales motivaciones y objetivos de este trabajo. En el segundo capítulo se describen los detalles de la síntesis y caracterización de los óxidos mixtos de CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3. Se estudian las principales caracteristicas de este material ternario en función de su composición; en particular, los aspectos cristalográficos por difracción de rayos X (DRX), la estructura porosa por fisisorci´on isot´ermica de N2 y dispersión de rayos X a bajos ángulos (SAXS) y el comportamiento redox mediante la tácnica de reducción a temperatura programada (TPR), tanto convencional como por espectroscopía in-situ de absorción de rayos-X cerca del borde de absorción (XANES). Del análisis estructural por las técnicas de DRX y Raman se pudo confirmar la incorporaci´on del Sc2O3 a la red del CeO2-ZrO2 con un marcado incremento de las vacancias de oxígeno tanto intrínsecas como extrínsecas con la adición del catión Sc3+ a la red. La elevada solubilidad del catión Sc3+ alcanzada se atribuyó a los métodos de síntesis químicos utilizados, de gelificación-combustión y de complejación de cationes con ácido cítrico, que permitieron obtener óxidos mixtos con tamaños medios de cristalita nanométricos. Finalmente, de los ensayos de TPR convencionales y por espectrocopía XANES, se concluyó que la adición del dopante trivalente a la estructura resulta en un mayor grado de reducción en todas las muestras ternarias frente a los óxidos binarios. Se debe destacar que el material ternario de composición rica en óxido de cerio sintetizado en esta tesis no ha sido reportado previamente en bibliografía, lo que constituye una novedad de este trabajo. En el tercer capítulo se estudia la estabilidad estructural, morfológica y redox del material mediante técnicas de espectroscopia Raman, DRX in-situ con radiación sincrotrón, microscopía electrónica de barrido (SEM) y TPR. Las muestras con contenido hasta 4 %at. Sc presentaron una estructura estable hasta 1200 ?C en atmósfera oxidante y hasta 1000 ?C en atmósfera reductora, manteniendo con el tratamiento térmico a 1000 ?C abundante mesoporosidad y buenos valores de superficie específica hasta en las muestras calcinadas a 1200 ?C (20-30 m2 .g-1 ). En el cuarto capítulo se presentan los resultados de la evaluación catalítica de los óxidos mixtos de CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3 para la oxidación total de metano. En todos los ensayos se observó un aumento de actividad para la oxidación de metano en las muestras con contenido creciente de escandio y un excelente cierre del balance de masas en el reactor, mostrando la capacidad de los materiales para evitar la formación de depósitos carbonosos. Los catalizadores mostraron una estructura estable durante los ensayos de DRX in-situ con luz sincrotrón. Las muestras con 4 %at. Sc y 6 %at. Sc en su composición mostraron un comportamiento estable luego de 8 h de operación continua a 800 ?C. Se presenta un estudio cinético preliminar obteniéndose una energía de activación aparente que disminuye su valor con el agregado de dopante. Los ensayos de XANES in-situ permitieron corroborar la participación del mecanismo de óxido-reducción del Ce durante la reacción de oxidación de metano. En el quinto capítulo se estudia, en particular, el efecto del agregado del CuO al sistema NiO/CeO2-ZrO2 en la reducibilidad del material y la actividad para la oxidación parcial de metano mediante la técnica de XANES in-situ con radiación sincrotrón. Se estudiaron los estados de oxidación del Cu, Ni y Ce durante los ensayos de TPR y de oxidación parcial de metano in-situ. Se propone un método de análisis novedoso que permite realizar una comparación directa de los perfiles de reducción obtenidos por XANES con los que se obtienen con un equipo convencional. Los resultados mostraron que la presencia tanto del Cu como del Ni promueven la reducción del Ce presente en el soporte. Se observó que la temperatura de inicio de la reducción depende marcadamente del tamaño medio de cristalita del NiO, comenzando significativamente antes en muestras de menor tamaño. Se observó también que la calcinaci{on a 1000 ?C propicia una mayor interacción del NiO con el soporte, tornando más lenta la cinética de reducción del NiO. La adición del CuO al sistema NiO/ZDC permitó la reducción del NiO a temperaturas más bajas y también contribuyó a reducir la extensión de la segunda etapa de reducción que se atribuye a la reducción de las especies que interactúan fuertemente con el soporte. Los ensayos de oxidación parcial de metano in-situ mostraron una clara interacción entre el comportamiento redox del Ce presente en el soporte de CeO2-ZrO2 y las partículas de Ni de la fase activa. El agregado del Sc al soporte mostró ser particularmente beneficioso en atmósfera de metano en la reducibilidad del soporte y en la producción de CO e H2, indicando la mayor capacidad del material para entregar oxígeno de la red para oxidar el combustible alimentado. Este efecto resulta de gran interés para la aplicación del material dopado con Sc como soporte del ánodo de una SOFC. En el sexto capítulo se estudian los materiales que mostraron las mejores propiedades redox y actividad catalítica como ánodos de IT-SOFCs. Se evalúa el efecto del agregado de distintos contenidos de CuO:NiO y Fe2O3:NiO al sistema CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3 en la resistencia de polarización de los electrodos obtenidos. Por último se presentan los ensayos realizados en celda de dos cámaras utilizando como ánodos los materiales propuestos en este trabajo y se muestran las curvas de descarga y de potencia extraída de las pilas obtenidas. Se estudia, además, el efecto de la alimentación directa de biogás sintético a las celdas en la resistencia de polarización de los materiales de ´anodo. Asimismo, se muestran los resultados del acople exitoso del efluente de un convertidor catalítico de biogás a una celda SOFC con los materiales desarrollados en este trabajo de tesis. Se trata del primer ensayo de este tipo realizado en la Argentina. Finalmente, se describen los pasos de la puesta a punto de un método de obtención de electrolitos ultra-delgados de ZrO2-Y2O3 (YSZ). Se ensayaron los ánodos preparados en esta tesis con alimentación directa de metano, obteniendo una potencia estable de 275 mW.cm-2 a 950 ?C en operación continua continua durante 30 min con un potencial del circuito abierto de 1,1 V. Se trata del valor de potencia más alto que se ha logrado obtener en el país con alimentación directa de hidrocarburos. En el séptimo capítulo se presentan las conclusiones y perspectivas de este trabajo de tesis y en el octavo capitulo se presentan las publicaciones que se originaron a partir del trabajo realizado durante el período de tesis. In this work nanostructured CeO2-based materials were developed and their catalytic and electrocatalytic activity was assessed for their feasible application as intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) anodes. Highly active anodes for fuel oxidation were synthesized with mixed ionic-electronic conductivity to improve the operation of the cell. Two strategies were followed to enhance the behavior of the anodes in current development. In the first place, a partial substitution of ZrO2 by Sc2O3 in the CeO2- ZrO2 lattice was assessed. Materials with the following composition were synthesized: Ce0,9ScxZr1 –xO2 –d with 0 = x = 0,1. The main objective of this substitution was to incorporate to the lattice of the CeO2-ZrO2 mixed oxide an aliovalent dopant to enhance ionic conductivity in the material through oxygen vacancy generation in the crystal lattice and consequently improve catalytic activity toward methane oxidation. In the second place, metal oxide-ceramics (composites) based in CuO-NiO/CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3 and Fe2O3-NiO/CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3 were studied in order to reduce carbon deposition in anodes fueled with hydrocarbons. This work is structured in eight chapters: In Chapter 1 an introduction to the subject is presented altogether with the main aims of this research work. In Chapter 2 the details of the synthesis and characterization of CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3 mixed oxides are described. The main features of this ternary materials are studied as a function of its composition: crystallographic aspects by X-ray diffraction (XRD), porous structure by N2 physisorption and small angle X ray dispersion (SAXS) and the redox behavior by temperature programmed reduction technique (TPR) both with conventional laboratory equipment and in-situ X ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). From the structural analysis derived from XRD and Raman spectroscopy results, the incorporation of Sc2O3 to the CeO2-ZrO2 lattice was confirmed altogether with a marked increase in intrinsic and extrinsic oxygen vacancies generated through Sc3+ addition. The high solubility of Sc3+ in the lattice was reached in nanostructured samples prepared by means of soft chemical synthesis routes involving citrate complexation and gel-combustion, which gave rise to porous powders with crystallite sizes in the nanometer range. Finally, from TPR results, the addition of Sc2O3 to the CeO2-ZrO2 system led to a ternary material with enhanced reducibility, which turned out to be significantly higher than that of both binary materials. It is worth to mention that there are no previous reports on the ternary system hereby presented. In Chapter 3 structural, morphological and redox stability of the samples are studied by means of Raman spectroscopy, in-situ XRD with synchrotron radiation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and TPR. Samples with Sc content up to 4 at. % exhibited a stable structure up to 1200 ?C in oxidizing atmospheres and up to 1000 ?C in reducing atmospheres. High mesoporosity was achieved in samples fired at 1000 ?C and specific surface area results of samples fired at 1200 ?C yielded values of 20-30 m2 .g-1 . In Chapter 4, the results of catalytic activity of CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3 mixed oxides for complete methane combustion are presented. In all cases an activity toward methane oxidation was enhanced with an increase in Sc content and an excellent carbon mass balance in the reactor was achieved, indicating the capacity of the samples to avoid carbon deposition. Catalysts showed a stable structure during in-situ XRD experiments with synchrotron radiation. Samples with 4 at. % Sc and 6 at. % Sc content exhibited a stable behavior during 8 h time-on-stream experiments at 800 ?C. A preliminary kinetic study is presented were the apparent activation energies for complete methane combustion are calculated, revealing that dopant incorporation is able to reduce activation energy for methane oxidation. In Chapter 5, the effect of CuO addition to the NiO/CeO2-ZrO2 system is assessed in terms of sample reducibility and activity toward catalytic partial oxidation of methane (CPOM) by means of XANES in-situ experiments with synchrotron radiation. Cu, Ni and Ce oxidation states are studied during TPR and CPOM tests. A novel method to perform a direct comparison of conventional TPR profiles with XANES reduction profiles is proposed. Results indicated that the presence of both Cu and Ni promotes the reduction of the Ce present in the ceramic support. Light-off temperature for NiO reduction was markedly affected by NiO mean crystallite size, being significantly shifted toward low temperatures with small crystallite sizes. A firing temperature of 1000 ?C was found to promote NiO interaction with the CeO2-based support, delaying NiO reduction kinetics. The addition of CuO to the NiO/CeO2-ZrO2 system allowed the reduction of NiO at lower temperatures and also contributed to diminishing the extent of the second reduction step attributed to those species that strongly interact with the support. CPOM experiments revealed a clear interplay between the redox behavior of the Ce present in the support and the Ni particles present in the active phase. The addition of Sc to the support proved to be particulary beneficial in methane atmosphere in terms of support reducibility and CO and H2 production, indicating the enhanced capacity of the ternary material to deliver oxygen from the lattice to oxidize the fuel. This effect is of great interest for IT-SOFC anode applications. In Chapter 6, the performance of IT-SOFC anodes prepared with selected samples with improved redox and catalytic activity is displayed. The effect in the polarization resistance of electrodes with the addition of different CuO:NiO and Fe2O3:NiO contents to the CeO2-ZrO2-Sc2O3 system is assessed. Finally, the results of the experiments performed in two chamber IT-SOFCs built with the anodes synthesized in this work are presented. Power density and voltage-current plots of the fuel cells prepared are exhibited. The effect of the direct feed of synthetic biogas to the cells in terms of anode polarization resistance is studied. Furthermore, the results of the successful coupling of the effluent of a biogas catalytic converter to a SOFC cell built with the materials developed in this work are presented. It should be noted that this is the first time in Argentina that such experiments are performed. Finally, the optimization of a method to fabricate ultra-thin electrolytes of ZrO2-Y2O3 (YSZ) is described. Anodes fabricated in this work, directly fueled with methane were evaluated yielding a stable power density of 275 mW.cm-2 at 950 ?C in continuous operation during 30 min with an open circuit voltage of 1,1 V. This value of power density is the highest achieved in Argentina to the moment with direct hydrocarbon feed. La implementación de políticas inclusivas y la eliminación de barreras son cruciales para el desarrollo económico y social mediante la accesibilidad, garantizando igualdad de oportunidades y acceso a recursos para todos, incluyendo personas con discapacidades. El transporte público juega un papel clave en esta equidad. La utilización de nuevas metodologías y datos abiertos permite decisiones informadas, especialmente en ingeniería civil y transporte, optimizando la planificación y operación de infraestructuras y servicios de transporte. Este enfoque integral aborda la equidad en la cobertura y movilidad de diversos grupos, identificando y corrigiendo inequidades, y adaptándose a cambios demográficos y tecnológicos para un sistema de transporte coherente con las necesidades sociales. En este contexto, esta tesis de grado se concentra en la intersección entre la movilidad urbana, el análisis de datos y la planificación efectiva. La investigación busca no solo enriquecer las evaluaciones de proyectos de transporte con indicadores de accesibilidad, sino también respaldar decisiones con evidencia empírica. Para ello, se plantea el caso de diagnosticar, evaluar y comparar la accesibilidad a establecimientos educativos y de salud a través del transporte público en dos comunas de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA) con diferentes niveles socioeconómicos, con el objetivo de comprender mejor las disparidades en el acceso a servicios esenciales. Para abordar esta problemática se plantearon, a nivel conceptual, una serie de propuestas con el objeto de reducir las brechas de accesibilidad que se han identificado, las cuales están relacionadas con las disparidades en los tiempos mínimos de desplazamiento, las oportunidades acumuladas en cada una de las comunas, las limitaciones de acceso al alejarnos de los corredores principales de las comunas y las variaciones en la infraestructura disponible en cada caso. Los resultados revelan disparidades geográficas en la accesibilidad a servicios de salud y educación en transporte público en la CABA. En particular, se observa una marcada disparidad entre dos comunas con diferencias socioeconómicas significativas, destacándose que la población más vulnerable enfrenta una situación más desfavorable en cuanto a la accesibilidad a establecimientos de salud y educativos. Por ejemplo, se encontraron las siguientes brechas de acceso: en la Comuna 2, que posee el mayor nivel socioeconómico promedio, los tiempos de desplazamiento a los centros de salud son de aproximadamente 10 minutos para cualquier categoría, mientras que en la Comuna 8, estos tiempos se extienden a más de 40 minutos. Al analizar el acceso a establecimientos educativos dentro de un radio de 60 minutos, en la Comuna 2 hay más de 10 opciones disponibles sin importar la categoría del establecimiento o el tiempo de caminata, mientras que en la Comuna 8 la situación es más heterogénea, con zonas que no cuentan con más de 2 oportunidades en una hora. Los ensayos en modelos físicos a escala reducida siguen siendo la herramienta más utilizada para el diseño, optimización y verificación de estructuras hidráulicas complejas. Para que el flujo en un modelo a escala reducida sea semejante al del prototipo se requiere que todas las fuerzas involucradas en el flujo sean proporcionales entre ambas escalas, con un factor de proporción único, constante en el espacio y en el tiempo. En la práctica, esta condición de semejanza dinámica es virtualmente imposible de cumplir rigurosamente, por lo que usualmente se identifica y pone a escala solo el tipo de fuerza dominante para el flujo bajo estudio. Los efectos distorsivos producidos por las fuerzas fuera de escala se denominan efectos de escala. En principio, siempre que se conozca la física, los efectos de todas las fuerzas actuantes tanto a escala de prototipo como de modelo físico pueden representarse de manera precisa en un modelo matemático apropiado, y luego resolverse numéricamente. Dado que cada fuerza se representa en este modelo con su escala correcta, este podría utilizarse para determinar las diferencias que se producen al cambiar de una escala a otra, y de tal manera cuantificar los efectos de escala existentes en un determinado modelo físico, e incluso corregirlos. En la práctica, no obstante, el uso de esquematizaciones simplificadas para tener en cuenta el efecto de fenómenos sub-grilla, en especial de la turbulencia, introducen incertidumbres sobre la capacidad de los modelos de la dinámica de fluidos computacional (CFD) de predecir efectos de escala relacionados con estos procesos simplificados. A fin de contemplar y reducir las incertidumbres mencionadas en el proceso de evaluación de efectos de escala mediante modelos numéricos se propone una metodología original, consistente en definir un Coeficiente de Efectos de Escala, que funciona como factor de conversión entre cualquier variable semejante del prototipo y el modelo físico. Se demuestra que este coeficiente puede ser estimado a partir de resultados numéricos siempre que se mantengan relativamente cercanos a la unidad tres Factores de Error, asociados al modelo matemático, a la discretización y a los parámetros de entrada respectivamente. Se plantean en el trabajo estrategias para neutralizar el Factor de Error asociado a los parámetros de entrada y a la discretización. El Factor de Error asociado al modelo, no obstante, no puede evaluarse de manera directa para cualquier problema en estudio. Por lo tanto, para asegurar que el modelo matemático adoptado es capaz de resolver los efectos de escala deseados, se propone la resolución de unos o más problemas de prueba subrogantes. Estos problemas deben contener los mismos procesos que producen efectos de escala en el problema principal, y contar con datos experimentales a varias escalas. En el trabajo se resuelven problemas de prueba con modelos Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) usando distintos modelos de turbulencia y tratamientos de pared para verificar su capacidad de evaluar efectos de escala viscosos. Se presentan luego varias aplicaciones a problemas prácticos en esclusas de navegación y crestas de vertedero utilizando modelos de tipo RANS. Laboratory-scale physical models continue to be the ultimate tool for the design, optimization, and verification of complex hydraulic structures. To achieve perfect similarity between physical models and prototypes a single, constant and uniform scale for all types of forces is required. In practice, this condition is virtually impossible to achieve, so the usual procedure is to identify and properly scale only the dominant type of force for the specific case under study. The distortive effects produced by out-of-scale forces are known as scale effect. In principle, as long as the fundamental physics is well known, the effect of all forces actuating on both the prototype and the physical model can be represented accurately into an appropriate mathematical model, and then solved numerically. Given that this model would represent all forces with their correct scale, it could be used to determine the differences that appear when changing from one scale to the other, thus allowing to quantify and eventually correct the scale effects of the physical model. In practice, however, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) models require the usage of simplified schematization to account for subgrid phenomena, especially turbulence. This introduces uncertainty about their capability of predicting scale effects related to these simplified processes. To take into account these uncertainties on the process of numerical evaluation of scale effects, an original methodology is proposed, based on the definition of a Scale Effect Coefficient, which works as a conversion factor between any similar variable of the prototype and the physical model. It is shown that this coefficient can be computed from numerical model results as long as three Error Factors are maintained close to unity. These factors are associated with the mathematical model, the discretization and the input parameters respectively. Strategies to neutralize the Error Factors associated with input parameters and discretization are proposed. However, the Error Factor related to the model cannot be evaluated directly for a given problem of interest. Hence, to ensure that the selected mathematical model is capable of resolving the desired scale effects, the solution of one or more subrogate Test Problems is proposed. These must contain the same physical processes leading to scale effects on the main problem, and have experimental data available at different scales. In this thesis, a number of test problems are solved with Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) models with different turbulence models and wall treatments to evaluate their capability for solving viscous scale effects. Several applications to hydraulic structures using RANS models are then presented, including ship-locks and weir crests.
