El fenómeno de la turbulencia tiene una fuerte presencia en flujos industriales. Sin embargo, el estudio numérico de flujos turbulentos en muchas condiciones de interés está fuera del alcance de la capacidad de cálculo de las supercomputadoras más grandes hasta el momento. La reducción del problema al caso bidimensional permitir obtener soluciones numéricas con parámetros realistas a un menor costo computacional. Cuando se sigue este camino la mayor dificultad reside en la validación experimental de los resultados, ya en que en muchos casos los flujos bidimensionales son de difícil materialización. En esta tesis realizamos un estudio experimental de las propiedades estadísticas de los flujos turbulentos bidimensionales, con especial énfasis en la caracterización de sus leyes de escala y en el desarrollo de fenómenos intermitentes en el flujo. La configuración experimental para flujos bidimensionales considerada consiste en un túnel de jabón donde la turbulencia se genera con un peine. En una primer etapa se plantea el estudio teórico para determinar las condiciones que permiten establecer la analogía entre un flujo en túnel de jabón y un flujo bidimensional incompresible. A continuación tratamos el estudio experimental del campo de velocidades que se realiza con las técnicas de velocimetría PIV y OPFLOW con imágenes obtenidas con las técnicas Schlieren e interferometria. Se estudian las propiedades estadísticas del flujo a partir de 4 diferentes técnicas espectrales: Fourier, Wavelets, Hilbert- Huang y POD Koopman. El estudio ilustra la capacidad de cada una de estas técnicas para recuperar las leyes previstas de manera teórica. El trabajo concluye acerca de la ausencia de intermitencia del flujo estudiado y brinda nuevos elementos de análisis para calificar las bondades de resultados obtenidos con diferentes técnicas numéricas. Turbulence is ubiquitous in atmospheric and oceanic flows. However, the numerical study of threedimensional turbulent flows under realistic conditions and control parameters is out of reach even when using the largest supercomputers up to day. In geophysical flows, the presence of rotation and stratification reduces the dynamics to that of two dimensions, allowing numerical studies to approach the problem with more realistic parameters at a lower computational cost. On the other hand, when this approach is followed the problem resides on experimental validation, since two dimensional flows are hard to obtain in the laboratory. In this proposal we present a pronged study, with experiments to analyze statistical properties of flows in two- and three-dimensions, with a special focus in the characterization of scaling laws and in the development of impulsive events in the flow. The experimental setup to study two-dimensional flows is a soap film “tunnel”, where turbulence will be generated using a comb, while for the three-dimensional case we will use wind tunnels where turbulence is generated by a grid. The velocity field will be measured in the former case using Schlieren velocimetry, while in the latter the PIV and OPFLOW technique will be used. Different spectrals methods will be used to analyze each case. We will study the flow properties in scales larger and smaller than the energy injection scale. As a result of this proposal, we expect to be able to link large scale properties of the flow with spectral properties of turbulence, as well as improve models of hydrodynamic turbulence. Fourier, Wavelet, Hilbert Huang and POD Koopman: statistics flow properties from 4 different spectral techniques are studied. The study illustrates the ability of each of these techniques to recover laws theoretically expected. The thesis concludes about the absence of intermittent flow studied and provides new elements of analysis to describe the benefits of results obtained with different numerical techniques. El objetivo de esta tesis es el desarrollo de materiales sorbentes de CO2 para ser utilizados junto con un catalizador de NiMgAl desarrollado previamente en el grupo, en la reacción de reformado de etanol con vapor de agua con captura simultánea de CO2, orientado a la formación de H2 de alta pureza. Se estudiaron dos grupos de materiales: CaO y sus derivados; y Óxidos Dobles Laminares de MgAl promovidos con K. Los sólidos fueron caracterizados por diversas técnicas: termogravimetría con análisis térmico diferencial (TGA-DTA); sortometría de N2; difracción de rayos X para muestras en polvo (DRXP), para conocer sus características estructurales y las fases que lo componen; desorción de CO2 a temperatura programada (TPD-CO2), para analizar el carácter básico de las muestras. Además, los resultados de basicidad se complementaron con la técnica de FTIR-ATR; se empleó la técnica de espectrometría de emisión óptica de plasma acoplado inductivamente (ICP-OES), para conocer la composición química de los materiales sintetizados y la técnica de microscopía electrónica de barrido (SEM), para comparar la morfología de las muestras. En el primer grupo los absorbentes fueron desarrollados sustituyendo parcialmente el CaO por una fase inerte denominada mayenita (Ca12Al14O33). De esta forma se obtuvo el sólido D85, con 85 % p/p de CaO; y D75 con 75 %. Se estudió el efecto de la fase mayenita en los absorbentes y su desempeño en la operación multicíclica de absorción desorción de CO2, y en el reformado de etanol con captura simultánea de CO2 para producir H2 de alta pureza. Se determinó que el derivado D85 tiene la mayor estabilidad y mejor capacidad de captura en la operación multicíclica de absorción-desorción, y en el reformado con vapor con captura simultánea de CO2 permite obtener altas purezas de H2 (mayores a 95 %), y purezas menores o iguales a 2,5 % de CO durante 20 ciclos de reacción-regeneración. El estudio cinético de la reacción carbonatación sobre CaO y D85 aplicando el modelo del grano, permitió determinar los parámetros cinéticos (energía de activación y factor pre-exponencial), de ambos materiales, donde se comprobó que no había diferencias significativas entre CaO y su derivado. Además, se obtuvo que la reacción de carbonatación es de primer orden respecto a la presión parcial de CO2. En el segundo grupo de adsorbentes se modificó un Óxido Doble Laminar de MgAl con diferentes contenidos de K. Estos sólidos fueron desarrollados impregnando el óxido doble laminar de MgAl con distintos contenidos de K de 0, 10, 15 y 20 %p/p. Se determinó que este promotor incrementa la proporción de sitios básicos fuertes, lo que tiene una clara influencia en el desempeño de los materiales, ya que los sólidos con contenidos de K de15 y 20 %p/p alcanzaron los mejores resultados en 20 ciclos de adsorción-desorción de CO2, como consecuencia del aumento de la estabilidad y capacidad de adsorción y de desorción cíclica, respecto del LDO sin promover. En cuanto al reformado de etanol con vapor con captura simultánea de CO2, se observaron altas purezas de H2 (cercanas al 100 % durante el breakthrough), y contenidos de CO menores al 5 % durante 20 ciclos, con los adsorbentes de 15 y 20 %p/p de K. This thesis focuses on the development of CO2 sorbent materials, which can be used with a NiMgAl catalyst previously developed in this research group. These materials are intended for sorption-enhanced ethanol steam reforming reaction, aiming high-purity H2 production. The study encompasses two groups of materials: CaO and its derivatives, and K-promoted MgAl Layered Double Oxides. The synthesized materials underwent comprehensive characterization using various techniques, including: thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA); N2 sorptometry, to describe its textural characteristics; powder X ray diffraction (PXRD), to determine the phases present in each material and its structural characteristics; CO2 temperature programmed desorption (TPD-CO2), to analyze the basic character of the samples; these results were complemented by FTIR-ATR technique; inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry for chemical composition determination; and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), for morphological comparisons. In the first group, the sorbent materials were developed by partial substitution of CaO with an inert phase called mayenite (Ca12Al14O33). In this way, two solids were obtained: D85 with 85 % w/w CaO, and D75 with 75 % w/w CaO. A comparison between pure CaO and its derivatives was conducted to assess the effect of the mayenite phase on sorbents textural and structural characteristics and on their performance in the multi-cycle CO2 sorption-desorption operation and on sorption-enhanced ethanol steam reforming (SE-ESR) to produce high-purity H2., as well. D85 demostrated the highest stability and the highest CO2 sorption capacity in the multi-cycle sorption-desorption operation. In the sorption-enhanced ethanol steam reforming, this derivative allows to obtain high-purity H2 (above 95 %) and CO purities equal to or less than 2.5 % over 20 reaction-regeneration cycles. Kinetic studies for carbonation reactions of CaO and D85 showed similar kinetics parameters (activation energy and preexponential factor) with a first-order dependency on CO2 partial pressure. For the second group of sorbents, a MgAl Layered Double Oxide was modified with varying K contents (0 %, 10 %, 15 %, and 20 % w/w). The addition of K increased the proportion of strong basic sites, enhancing material performance. Solid modified with 15 and 20 %w/w of K exhibited the best results over 20 cycles of CO2 adsorption desorption, showing the highest stability and cyclic adsorption and desorption capacities. Regarding the sorption-enhanced ethanol steam reforming, high H2 purities (close to 100 % during the breakthrough) and CO contents below 5 % were observed over 20 cycles using the sorbents with 15 and 20 %w/w of K. Los datums de mareas son información clave y básica utilizada en los campos de la navegación, el diseño de estructuras costeras, la delimitación de fronteras marítimas y la alerta de inundaciones. La Organización Hidrográfica Internacional recomienda utilizar la marea astronómica más baja (LAT) y la marea astronómica más alta (HAT) como niveles de referencia de marea para la profundidad, la línea de costa y las distancias verticales en los campos de la hidrografía y la ingeniería costera. Su cálculo puede ser complejo porque varía tanto espacial como temporalmente. Por su parte, la precisión cada vez mayor del posicionamiento 3D con Sistemas Globales de Navegación por Satélite requiere que el datum esté referenciado al elipsoide WGS84. Los objetivos de este trabajo son calcular y desarrollar un modelo empírico para determinar las distancias entre el LAT y el elipsoide WGS84, y entre el HAT y el citado elipsoide, en la región Patagónica e Islas Malvinas. Para llevarlos a cabo se calculan el LAT y el HAT a partir de predicciones horarias de marea que abarcan un período de 30 años. Para ello se utilizan las constantes armónicas del modelo de marea FES2014c, en una grilla de 1/16º x 1/16º, que extiende los resultados hacia las costas. Para referirlos al elipsoide WGS84, se utilizan los resultados del modelo de nivel medio del mar MSS CLS22, interpolados a las localizaciones de la grilla del modelo de marea. En los resultados obtenidos es fácil observar la influencia de la batimetría en el cambio de forma de las isolíneas de LAT y de HAT, al referenciarlas al modelo MSS CLS22, tanto para la región Patagónica como para la de Malvinas. También es observable el punto anfidrómico al sur de la Isla Soledad donde los valores de LAT y HAT (sin referir al nivel medio) son los más cercanos a cero. Finalmente es interesante destacar que el patrón de líneas de LAT difiere con el de HAT en ambas regiones analizadas, y el amplio rango de datums hallados para la Patagonia, oscila entre 12m y 21m en el caso del HAT y entre 4.3m y 16m para el LAT, en ambos casos referidos al elipsoide. El producto final ha sido diseñado para aguas abiertas con alta precisión, y con una tolerancia de un error menor a 3cm en algunas áreas costeras de Bahía Grande y la costa de Islas Malvinas. Será útil tanto para el desarrollo de actividades marinas relevantes en la zona, como para aumentar la eficacia de los levantamientos hidrográficos, contribuyendo al mismo tiempo a una navegación más precisa en zonas críticas. Los ensayos en modelos físicos a escala reducida siguen siendo la herramienta más utilizada para el diseño, optimización y verificación de estructuras hidráulicas complejas. Para que el flujo en un modelo a escala reducida sea semejante al del prototipo se requiere que todas las fuerzas involucradas en el flujo sean proporcionales entre ambas escalas, con un factor de proporción único, constante en el espacio y en el tiempo. En la práctica, esta condición de semejanza dinámica es virtualmente imposible de cumplir rigurosamente, por lo que usualmente se identifica y pone a escala solo el tipo de fuerza dominante para el flujo bajo estudio. Los efectos distorsivos producidos por las fuerzas fuera de escala se denominan efectos de escala. En principio, siempre que se conozca la física, los efectos de todas las fuerzas actuantes tanto a escala de prototipo como de modelo físico pueden representarse de manera precisa en un modelo matemático apropiado, y luego resolverse numéricamente. Dado que cada fuerza se representa en este modelo con su escala correcta, este podría utilizarse para determinar las diferencias que se producen al cambiar de una escala a otra, y de tal manera cuantificar los efectos de escala existentes en un determinado modelo físico, e incluso corregirlos. En la práctica, no obstante, el uso de esquematizaciones simplificadas para tener en cuenta el efecto de fenómenos sub-grilla, en especial de la turbulencia, introducen incertidumbres sobre la capacidad de los modelos de la dinámica de fluidos computacional (CFD) de predecir efectos de escala relacionados con estos procesos simplificados. A fin de contemplar y reducir las incertidumbres mencionadas en el proceso de evaluación de efectos de escala mediante modelos numéricos se propone una metodología original, consistente en definir un Coeficiente de Efectos de Escala, que funciona como factor de conversión entre cualquier variable semejante del prototipo y el modelo físico. Se demuestra que este coeficiente puede ser estimado a partir de resultados numéricos siempre que se mantengan relativamente cercanos a la unidad tres Factores de Error, asociados al modelo matemático, a la discretización y a los parámetros de entrada respectivamente. Se plantean en el trabajo estrategias para neutralizar el Factor de Error asociado a los parámetros de entrada y a la discretización. El Factor de Error asociado al modelo, no obstante, no puede evaluarse de manera directa para cualquier problema en estudio. Por lo tanto, para asegurar que el modelo matemático adoptado es capaz de resolver los efectos de escala deseados, se propone la resolución de unos o más problemas de prueba subrogantes. Estos problemas deben contener los mismos procesos que producen efectos de escala en el problema principal, y contar con datos experimentales a varias escalas. En el trabajo se resuelven problemas de prueba con modelos Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) usando distintos modelos de turbulencia y tratamientos de pared para verificar su capacidad de evaluar efectos de escala viscosos. Se presentan luego varias aplicaciones a problemas prácticos en esclusas de navegación y crestas de vertedero utilizando modelos de tipo RANS. Laboratory-scale physical models continue to be the ultimate tool for the design, optimization, and verification of complex hydraulic structures. To achieve perfect similarity between physical models and prototypes a single, constant and uniform scale for all types of forces is required. In practice, this condition is virtually impossible to achieve, so the usual procedure is to identify and properly scale only the dominant type of force for the specific case under study. The distortive effects produced by out-of-scale forces are known as scale effect. In principle, as long as the fundamental physics is well known, the effect of all forces actuating on both the prototype and the physical model can be represented accurately into an appropriate mathematical model, and then solved numerically. Given that this model would represent all forces with their correct scale, it could be used to determine the differences that appear when changing from one scale to the other, thus allowing to quantify and eventually correct the scale effects of the physical model. In practice, however, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) models require the usage of simplified schematization to account for subgrid phenomena, especially turbulence. This introduces uncertainty about their capability of predicting scale effects related to these simplified processes. To take into account these uncertainties on the process of numerical evaluation of scale effects, an original methodology is proposed, based on the definition of a Scale Effect Coefficient, which works as a conversion factor between any similar variable of the prototype and the physical model. It is shown that this coefficient can be computed from numerical model results as long as three Error Factors are maintained close to unity. These factors are associated with the mathematical model, the discretization and the input parameters respectively. Strategies to neutralize the Error Factors associated with input parameters and discretization are proposed. However, the Error Factor related to the model cannot be evaluated directly for a given problem of interest. Hence, to ensure that the selected mathematical model is capable of resolving the desired scale effects, the solution of one or more subrogate Test Problems is proposed. These must contain the same physical processes leading to scale effects on the main problem, and have experimental data available at different scales. In this thesis, a number of test problems are solved with Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) models with different turbulence models and wall treatments to evaluate their capability for solving viscous scale effects. Several applications to hydraulic structures using RANS models are then presented, including ship-locks and weir crests.
