El cerebro es uno de los enigmas más relevantes que los seres humanos han estudiado desde el origen de los tiempos. Desde la antigua Grecia (y tal vez antes también) hasta nuestros tiempos, se hicieron innumerables estudios de su anatomía, de cómo funcionan y se conectan las neuronas, de cómo las diferentes regiones del cerebro se relacionan con las acciones o movimientos que se manifiestan en el cuerpo, y hasta de como el comportamiento funcional del cerebro permite que emerjan la conciencia, la propiocepción y las emociones. El estudio y la comprensión de este órgano vital es absolutamente relevante para distintos aspectos de la vida humana. En la actualidad, la neurociencia estudia al cerebro a nivel integral, gracias a su enfoque multidisciplinario, en búsqueda de respuestas que permitan, entre otra cosa, mejorar el diagnóstico y tratamiento de enfermedades neurológicas. En este trabajo nos centramos en el estudio de la conectividad funcional entre regiones cerebrales. Esta estudia, en particular, la dependencia temporal de la actividad neuronal entre regiones que están anatómicamente separadas y tiene relevancia, particularmente, en actividades o tareas que tienen alta demanda cognitiva. En el presente trabajo de tesis doctoral se estudiaron diferentes técnicas matemático computacionales para estudiar la conectividad cerebral funcional. Estas técnicas fueron aplicadas a registros de electroencefalografía (EEG) y de esteroencefalografia (SEEG). Las técnicas aplicadas permitieron estudiar las características de respuestas a estímulos en un canal determinado tanto para frecuencias bajas (típicas del EEG) como en frecuencias altas (SEEG) para distintos grupos de sujetos que realizaban tareas cognitivas activas mientras se tomaban los registros. También se estudiaron técnicas de análisis para 2 contactos y se calculó el índice de conectividad wSMI (weighted symbolic mutual information) y el índice PLV (Phase Locking Value) en registros de EEG. Por último, se aplicaron 2 técnicas de estudio de la dinámica de sistemas. Se calculo el índice de información integrada, basado en una de las teorías más aceptadas de la consciencia (IIT), para estudiar transiciones y alteraciones de la conciencia durante crisis epiléptica. Estos resultados se complementaron con una análisis de grafos en donde se calcularon la modularidad y el camino mínimo medio. Los resultados muestran el desempeño de estos indicadores cuando son aplicados al tipo de señales estudiadas. Se analizaron ventajas y desventajas de cada uno y se compararon con otros métodos que fueron utilizados (y muchos de ellos aún lo son) por la comunidad científica. El trabajo concluye con las limitaciones de los modelos utilizados y los próximos pasos sugeridos para continuar desarrollando métodos que permitan mejorar el entendimiento del cerebro, los diagnósticos de enfermedades y los tratamientos. The human brain stands as one of the greatest enigmas that humankind has endeavored to solve since the dawn of time. From the ancient Greeks (and perhaps even earlier) to the present day, countless studies have delved into its anatomy, the intricate workings and connections of neurons, the interplay between different brain regions and the resulting actions or movements manifested in the body, and even the remarkable emergence of consciousness, proprioception, and emotions from the functional interplay within this intricate organ. Unveiling the mysteries of this vital organ holds immense significance for various aspects of human life. Modern neuroscience, armed with a multidisciplinary approach, undertakes a holistic study of the brain in pursuit of answers that will pave the way for, among other advancements, improved diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. This work focuses on the exploration of functional connectivity between brain regions, specifically examining the temporal dependence of neural activity between anatomically separated regions, particularly in the context of tasks that demand high cognitive engagement. This doctoral dissertation delves into the investigation of diverse mathematical and computational techniques employed to study functional brain connectivity. These techniques were applied to electroencephalography (EEG) and stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) recordings. The implemented techniques enabled the analysis of stimulus response characteristics in a specific channel, encompassing both low frequencies (characteristic of EEG) and high frequencies (SEEG), for distinct groups of subjects engaged in active cognitive tasks during recording. Additionally, techniques for analyzing two contacts were explored, and the weighted symbolic mutual information (wSMI) and phase locking value (PLV) connectivity indexes were calculated in EEG recordings. Lastly, two techniques for studying system dynamics were employed. The integrated information index, based on one of the most widely accepted theories of consciousness (IIT), was calculated to investigate transitions and alterations of consciousness during epileptic seizures. These findings were complemented by graph analysis, calculating modularity and mean shortest path. The results showcase the performance of these indicators when applied to the type of signals studied. The advantages and disadvantages of each method were evaluated and compared with other approaches utilized (and still employed) by the scientific community. The work concludes by acknowledging the limitations of the employed models and outlining the next steps suggested for continued development of methods that will further enhance our understanding of the brain, improve disease diagnosis, and optimize treatment strategies. Como es bien sabido, el hormigón armado es uno de los materiales más utilizados en la industria de la construcción y el efecto de las altas temperaturas sobre la respuesta de las estructuras que compone puede resultar devastador. El objetivo principal de este trabajo de investigación de maestría es analizar la incidencia de la acción de temperaturas elevadas sobre la resistencia a punzonamiento de elementos de hormigón armado. Para ello, se realiza el relevamiento del estado del arte en lo que respecta a dicho comportamiento a temperatura ambiente y en altas temperaturas, y luego se modela numéricamente un sistema estructural losa - columna de hormigón armado a distintas temperaturas en el rango de 20ºC a 1000ºC. Los resultados obtenidos de la modelación numérica en altas temperaturas son comparados con resultados obtenidos mediante la aplicación del método analítico basado en la Teoría de la Fisura Critica de Corte (CSCT - Critical Shear Crack Theory) y con resultados numéricos obtenidos por otros autores de la bibliografía científica. En particular, en la modelación computacional se utiliza el modelo constitutivo para hormigón denominado Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP), provisto por el software Abaqus. En dicho modelo se incorporan las modificaciones necesarias para incluir la dependencia de las propiedades termo-mecánicas en función de la temperatura. Finalmente, se realiza un análisis paramétrico considerando como variables principales los índices de daño del modelo constitutivo, las propiedades termomecánicas del acero y del hormigón y el nivel de temperatura. Los resultados obtenidos son analizados y discutidos con foco en la importancia de considerar situaciones de altas temperaturas, en particular de incendios, en estructuras civiles. En dichas condiciones, emergen significativas no linealidades en la respuesta mecánica de la estructura, las cuales podrían provocar un colapso prematuro de la misma. As is well known, reinforced concrete is one of the most widely used materials in the construction industry, and the effect of high temperatures can have a devastating impact on the response of the structures it comprises. Therefore, the objective of this master’s research work is to analyze the impact of elevated temperatures on the punching shear resistance of reinforced concrete elements. To this end, after reviewing the state of the art regarding this behavior at ambient and high temperatures, a reinforced concrete slab-column structural system is numerically modeled at various elevated temperatures, starting from 20ºC. The numerical modeling results are subsequently compared with those obtained using the Critical Shear Crack Theory (CSCT) method, as well as with results from numerical analyses conducted by other authors. In particular, the computational modeling uses the Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) constitutive model provided by Abaqus, incorporating the necessary modifications to account for the temperature dependence of thermo-mechanical properties. Finally, a parametric analysis is carried out, considering as the main variables the damage parameters of the constitutive model, the steel quality, the concrete quality, and the temperature level. An analysis of the obtained results and the corresponding discussion will be carried out, focusing on the importance of considering high-temperature scenarios, particularly in the event of fires in civil structures such as the one analyzed in this study. Under these conditions, significant nonlinearities arise in the mechanical response, which could lead to a premature collapse of the overall structure. En las últimas décadas, los investigadores han abordado la gestión del riesgo ante amenazas naturales como un problema de “toma de decisiones bajo incertidumbre”, y han resaltado la importancia de incluir esta incertidumbre en los modelos matemáticos. No obstante, entender y cuantificar la influencia de las incertidumbres producto de la falta de observaciones o conocimiento de los procesos físicos reales, comúnmente llamadas incertidumbres epistémicas sigue siendo un desafío común en las ciencias del riesgo y las amenazas naturales. El objetivo último de esta tesis es promover el uso de metodologías probabilísticas consistentes para la cuantificación y propagación de incertidumbres en modelos de riesgo en general, y en el análsis de amenaza de inundaciones en particular, de manera de mejorar el proceso de toma de decisiones. Con este objetivo en mente, esta tesis identifica y propone respuestas a tres desafíos pendientes dentro de esta temática: 1. Las estimaciones actuales de amenaza de inundación bajo incertidumbre epistémica proporcionan resultados poco útiles para el análisis de riesgo. 2. La influencia de las incertidumbres epistémicas en el diseño ingenieril basado en el riesgo, no es comprendida de manera completa aún. 3. La cuantificación de la incertidumbre en modelos de inundación con observaciones satelitales no se basa actualmente en modelos probabilísticos robustos. Para proporcionar una base matemática sólida sobre la noción de riesgo e incertidumbres, la tesis comienza proporcionando una revisión detallada de la “ciencia de los desastres”, haciendo hincapié en los modelos y las componentes necesarias para la caracterización del riesgo: amenaza, exposición y vulnerabilidad. Esta revisión proporciona las principales hipótesis y detalles matemáticos (y computacionales) del modelo probabilístico comúnmente utilizado para caracterizar y cuantificar el riesgo. Además, la revisión incluye los fundamentos conceptuales necesarios para la caracterización de las incertidumbres aleatorias y epistémicas, y su tratamiento unificado dentro de la teoría Bayesiana de las probabilidades mediante la distribución posterior predictiva de los eventos futuros. El modelo de incertidumbres propuesto es utilizado en el contexto del modelado de la amenaza de inundaciones para proporcionar una solución al primero de los 3 desafíos. Estimar la amenaza de inundaciones implica la concatenación de un modelo de recurrencia para eventos extremos (por ejemplo, un caudal extremo del río) y un modelo de inundación que transforma ese evento en una mancha de inundación. En la práctica, el método tradicional consiste en utilizar modelos ”óptimos” (best-fit models) apropiadamente calibrados pero que no incluyen la incertidumbre i en los parámetros y modelos utilizados. En esta investigación, propongo un modelo de simulación para cuantificar y propagar la incertidumbre en los parámetros de los modelos en el desarrollo de mapas de inundación que provean información probabilística útil para una posterior evaluación de modelos de daño. Se realiza un análisis Bayesiano de eventos extremos (Peaks-Over-Threshold) para la simulación de eventos futuros, y se utiliza un enfoque probabilístico de pseudo-verosimilitud para la calibración del modelo computacional de inundación y la estimación de la incertidumbre en las alturas de agua. Los mapas de amenaza se desarrollan calculando la probabilidad anual de excedencia de las alturas de agua, promedidadas entre todos los posibles parámetros de los modelos. Los resultados se comparan con los mapas de amenaza tradicionales mostrando que, no incluir las incertidumbres epistémicas puede subestimar la amenaza, resultando en diseños no-conservadores y con una tendencia que aumenta con el período de retorno. Los resultados también muestran que la influencia de la incertidumbre en la ocurrencia futua de eventos extremos de caudales es predominante sobre las incertidumbres en el modelo de inundación para el caso de estudio. Como la estimación de la amenaza es un componente fundamental de los modelos de riesgo y la toma de decisiones, esta investigación también explora la influencia de las incertidumbres epistémicas en el contexto más amplio del diseño ingenieril para abordar el segundo desafío. El problema del diseño en ingeniería pueden definirse como un problema de evaluación de riesgo, ya que requiere calcular la probabilidad de excedencia de alguna métrica de decisión (por ej. la altura de agua en un dique, o las pérdidas económicas debido a una inundación) calculada a partir de variables básicas y sus distribuciones correspondientes. Este trabajo intenta explorar respuestas a una pregunta importante para los ingenieros: ¿Cómo cambiaría mi diseño si incluyéramos la incertidumbre en los modelos utilizados? Usando el diseño de la altura de un dique como ejemplo, se comparan las estimaciones del modelo incluyendo distintas parametrizaciones de las incertidumbres, con las que se obtendrían usando un enfoque tradicional. Los resultados indican que la inclusión de las incertidumbres en los parámetros de los modelos puede tener una influencia significativa en el diseño final. Además, esta influencia depende fuertemente de la forma matemática del modelo de confiabilidad, y de la distribución de probabilidad de sus parámetros. Finalmente, esta tesis aborda el tercer desafío proponiendo una metodología Bayesiana para la calibración de un modelo de inundación 2D utilizando una observación de la mancha de inundación, incluyendo explícitamente la incertidumbre en los parámetros de rugosidad del modelo, las deficiencias estructurales del simulador y los errores de observación. El enfoque propuesto se compara con un método pseudo-probabilístico comúnmente utilizado (GLUE), y con otro modelo Bayesiano ii más simple. Los resultados muestran que las discrepancias entre el output del simulador de inundaciones y la observación de la mancha de inundación presentan una correlación espacial, y que los modelos de calibración que no tienen en cuenta esto pueden arrojar errores sistemáticos en las predicciones. El término aditivo que representa las deficiencias estructurales del simulador cumple el objetivo de capturar y corregir este comportamiento. Los resultados muestran, además, que las observaciones binarias (la mancha de inundación) no contienen información sobre la magnitud del proceso observado (por ejemplo, el nivel del agua en la inundación), lo que plantea problemas en la identificabilidad de los parámetros de rugosidad y de las otras componentes del modelo. La metodología propuesta, aunque desafiante desde el punto de vista computacional, demuestra una mejor performance que los métodos existentes. También tiene el potencial de combinar de manera consistente los datos observados de una mancha de inundación con otros datos, como información de sensores y registros obtenidos por la población (crowd-sourcing), algo que no es posible con los métodos actuales. Como conclusión general, la manera en que la incertidumbre epistémica es cuantificada y propagada para obtener estimaciones de amenaza y riesgo, es relevante en la toma de decisiones. Algunas de estas incertidumbres son difíciles, o imposibles, de cuantificar pero el resto deberían ser incluidas en los modelos de manera transparente y consistente. Se espera que las contribuciones aportadas por esta tesis ayuden a mejorar la comprensión sobre las potenciales consecuencias de omitir estas incertidumbres, y provean indicaciones sobre cómo cuantificarlas en un contexto general. En última instancia, espero que este trabajo contribuya al desafío general de naturalizar la inclusión de las incertidumbres epistémicas en la investigación académica y la práctica profesional. Researchers in the last decades have recurrently acknowledged natural-hazards risk management as a problem of decision-making under uncertainty and highlighted the importance of including this in the risk modeling workflow. However, understanding the influence of uncertainties that arise from incomplete information and knowledge about real processes, the so-called epistemic uncertainties, and ways for their robust quantification and propagation remains a challenge in the standard practice of natural hazards and risk assessments. In the search for a coherent and robust approach to epistemic uncertainty modeling in risk-based decision-making, this thesis has the ultimate objective of promoting the use of coherent probabilistic methodologies for uncertainty quantification and propagation in disaster risk analysis in general, and flood hazard analysis in particular, so as to lead to more robust risk management decisions. In this endeavour, this thesis identifies and tackles three research gaps: 1. Current flood hazard estimates under epistemic uncertainty provide poor output for risk assessments. 2. The influence of epistemic uncertainties in risk-based engineering design is not completely understood. 3. Uncertainty quantification in inundation models calibrated with flood extent observations are not based on robust probabilistic models. To provide a solid foundation of the mathematical basis of risk and uncertainties, this thesis begins by a thorough review of disaster science, emphasising the models and components required to characterize risk: hazard, exposure and vulnerability. This review provides the mathematical details and assumptions of the main probabilistic framework used to characterize and compute risk. Additionally, it discusses the conceptual basis for a unified treatment of aleatory and epistemic uncertainties through the Bayesian posterior predictive distributions of future events. The uncertainty framework proposed is tested in the context of flood hazard modeling to provide a solution to the first research gap. Estimating flood hazard requires the concatenation of a recurrence model for extreme events (i.e. an extreme river discharge) and an inundation model that propagates this event into a flood extent. In practice, the classical approach uses appropriately calibrated “best-fit” models that do not include, however, uncertainty in the parameters and models required. I propose a simulation approach to robustly account for uncertainty in model parameters, while developing a useful probabilistic output of flood hazard for further risk assessments. A Peaks-Over-Threshold Bayesian analysis is performed to simulate extreme events, and a pseudo-likelihood probabilistic approach for the v calibration of the inundation model is used to compute uncertain water depths. The annual probability averaged over all possible model parameters is used to develop hazard maps that account for epistemic uncertainties. Results are compared to traditional hazard maps, showing that ignoring epistemic uncertainties can underestimate the hazard and lead to non-conservative designs, and that this trend increases with return period. Results also show that uncertainties in the future occurrence of discharge events dominates over uncertainties in the inundation simulator for the case study. Since hazard estimates are a fundamental component of risk models and engineering decision-making, this research also explores the influence of epistemic uncertainties in the broader context of engineering design problems in order to tackle the second research gap. Design problems in engineering can be framed as a risk assessment problem that requires computing the probability of exceedance of some decision variable (e.g. water height at a levee, or flood-related economic losses), calculated from basic variables and their corresponding distributions. This work tries to answer an important question for engineers: How would my design change if we include uncertainty in the models used? Using the design of a riverine levee as a hypothetical example, I compare the levee height estimates including uncertainties, with the traditional approach using different distributions for the model parameters. I found that the inclusion of uncertainty in the parameters of the reliability model can yield a significant impact on the final design. Furthermore, this impact strongly depends on the mathematical shape of this model and the distributional model of its parameters. Finally, this thesis addresses the third research gap by proposing a fully Bayesian framework to calibrate a 2D physics-based inundation model using a single observation of flood extent, explicitly including uncertainty in the floodplain and channel roughness parameters, simulator structural deficiencies, and observation errors. The proposed approach is compared to the current state-of-practice Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) framework for calibration and with a simpler Bayesian model. Results show that discrepancies between the computational simulator output and the flood extent observation are spatially correlated, and calibration models that do not account for this, such as GLUE, may consistently mispredict flooding over large regions. The added structural deficiency term succeeds in capturing and correcting for this spatial behavior, improving the rate of correctly predicted pixels. Results also show that binary data (i.e. flooded or non-flooded) does not have information of the magnitude of the observed process (i.e. flood depths), raising issues in the identifiability of the roughness parameters, and the rest of the terms in the model. The proposed methodology, while computationally challengvi ing, is proven to perform better than existing techniques. It also has the potential to consistently combine observed flood extent data with other data such as sensor information and crowd-sourced data, something which is not possible with current methods. As a general take-away, the way that epistemic uncertainty is quantified and propagated towards hazard and risk estimates, matter for decision-making. Many of these uncertainties are very difficult, or impossible, to quantify, but the rest of them should be transparently and consistently included into the mathematical models. The contributions resulting from this thesis are expected to provide further insight into the potential consequences of not considering epistemic uncertainties, and to provide guidance on a rather general approach for their mathematical quantification and propagation. As a result, this work will hopefully contribute towards the overarching goal of naturalizing the inclusion of epistemic uncertainty in standard research and practice. El presente trabajo de tesis analiza diferentes aspectos de la dinámica de una suspensión de partículas sometida a una vibración vertical. En las condiciones de trabajo, las partículas, más pesadas que el líquido en el que están dispersas (líquido portador), forman un lecho en el fondo del recipiente o sustrato. La capa de líquido que sobrenada el lecho de partículas está en contacto también con las paredes laterales del recipiente y con el aire (superficie libre). Para estudiar la interacción entre el líquido portador, las partículas y el recipiente, utilizamos un abordaje progresivo en cuanto a la complejidad del sistema en estudio, que considera primero el caso de una capa de líquido puro que sobrenada a un sustrato rugoso y permeable que imita un lecho consolidado de partículas, para luego analizar el caso de un lecho no consolidado, en el cual, en principio, la dinámica de las partículas y del líquido están acopladas. Se emplearon técnicas de visualización y fotométricas para determinar la naturaleza de las estructuras de flujo en forma de ondas en la capa de líquido, su correlación con los patrones que se observan en el lecho de partículas, y las condiciones asociadas a la iniciación de movimiento y eventual resuspensión de las mismas. En el primer modelo experimental, se utilizaron como sustratos mallas metálicas de diferentes texturas, que se emplearon de dos maneras: sin modificar (abiertas), o selladas con una pintura impermeable. La variación en la textura y el sellado de las mallas permitió alterar la rugosidad y permeabilidad del sustrato, estudiándose su influencia en la aceleración umbral r c, y en la longitud de onda Aw, de la inestabilidad de Faraday que se presenta en forma de ondas en la capa de líquido sobrenadante. Como resultado principal se encontró que r c es mayor en presencia de una malla que para un sustrato liso, notablemente, tanto para mallas abiertas como para las selladas. Se comparan los resultados con predicciones de una teoría lineal para un sustrato liso. Se estimó un espesor efectivo de la capa líquida que depende de las características de las mallas Los otros dos modelos experimentales buscaron estudiar la interacción entre las ondas en la superficie del líquido sobrenadante y el lecho no consolidado de partículas, con el interés tecnológico asociado a la técnica de plantillas líquidas. Ambos estudiaron aspectos complementarios: El segundo, utilizando un recipiente cilíndrico y observación cenital, permitió determinar la naturaleza y características de las ondas en la capa de líquido sobrenadante y su relación con los patrones formados en el lecho de partículas. En las condiciones experimentales utilizadas, las ondas en el líquido son ondas capilares, de naturaleza armónica. Su longitud de onda característica, Aw, determinada por la frecuencia de vibración f, muestra correlación con la del lecho de partículas, Ap, que se presenta como una sucesión de crestas y valles en la dirección radial, formando anillos concéntricos. Se analizó cómo la rugosidad del lecho depende del número de Shields 0, que cuantifica la cizalla actuante sobre el lecho de partículas, encontrándose una dependencia cuadrática, con un cierto valor umbral. El tercer modelo permitió la observación en vista de corte de un recipiente estrecho (configuración cuasi-2D). Por encima de la aceleración crítica r c , y dependiendo de la frecuencia de excitación f, aparecen ondas de Faraday en la capa de líquido que sobrenada al lecho de partículas. Se estudió la dependencia de r c con la frecuencia de vibración f y con el espesor de la capa de líquido sobrenadante Ah. Por otro lado, se caracterizaron tres regímenes (a,b,c) de comportamiento del lecho de partículas a medida que disminuye Ah, en los cuales: (a) Las partículas están en reposo formando un lecho plano (b) Se movilizan debido a su interacción con las ondas en la superficie del líquido, generando una rugosidad de forma periódica en el lecho. (c) Comienzan a resuspenderse La transición entre estos regímenes depende de f pero no del radio a de la partícula. Para el régimen (b), se correlacionó la longitud Aw y la altura h w de las ondas en el líquido con la longitud Ap y la altura característica del lecho de partículas Ahp. Los resultados obtenidos aportan elementos para caracterizar la interacción entre las partículas, las estructuras de flujo en el líquido portador y el recipiente. También, constituyen un aporte en virtud de perspectivas de aplicaciones tecnológicas, como por ejemplo, las asociadas a la técnica de plantillas líquidas. The present thesis analyses different aspects of the dynamics of particle suspensions subjected to vertical vibration. In the working conditions, the particles, heavier than the liquid in which they are dispersed (carrier fluid), form a bed at the bottom of the container (substrate). The layer of liquid over the bed of particles is also in contact with the side walls of the container and with air (free surface) In order to study the interaction between the carrier liquid, the particles and the container, we use a progressive approach in terms of the complexity of the system under study, which first considers the case of a layer of pure liquid over a rough and permeable substrate that imitates a consolidated bed of particles, and then analyses the case of an unconsolidated bed, in which, in principle, the dynamics of the particles and the liquid are coupled. Visualisation and photometric techniques were used to determine the nature of the wavelike flow structures in the liquid layer, their correlation with the patterns observed in the particle bed, and the conditions associated with the initiation of movement and eventual resuspension of the particles. In the first experimental model, metal meshes of different textures were used as substrates, which were used in two ways: unmodified (open), or sealed with an impermeable paint. The variation in the texture and the sealing of the meshes allowed the roughness and permeability of the substrate to be altered, studying their influence on the threshold acceleration r c, and on the wavelength Aw, of Faraday’s instability which is presented in the form of waves in the supernatant liquid layer. As a main result, it was found that r c is greater in the presence of a mesh than for a smooth substrate, notably for both open and sealed meshes. The results are compared with predictions from a linear theory for a smooth substrate. An effective thickness of the liquid layer was estimated, which depends on the characteristics of the meshes. The other two experimental models sought to study the interaction between waves on the surface of the supernatant liquid and the unconsolidated bed of particles, with the technological interest associated with the liquid template technique. Both studied complementary aspects: The second, using a cylindrical vessel and zenithal observation, made it possible to determine, the nature and characteristics of the waves in the supernatant liquid layer and their relationship with the patterns formed in the particle bed. In the experimental conditions used, the waves in the liquid are capillary waves, of a harmonic nature. Their characteristic wavelength, Aw, determined by the vibration frequency f , shows correlation with that of the particle bed, Ap, which appears as a succession of ridges and valleys in the radial direction, forming concentric rings. We analysed how the roughness of the bed depends on the number of Shields 0 , which quantifies the shear acting on the particle bed, finding a quadratic dependence, with a certain threshold value The third model made it possible to observe, in cut view, of a narrow vessel (quasi-2D configuration). Above the critical acceleration r c, and depending on the excitation frequency f , Faraday waves appear in the liquid layer overlying the particle bed. The dependence of r c on the vibration frequency f and on the thickness of the supernatant liquid layer Ah was studied. On the other hand, three regimes (a,b,c) of particle bed behaviour as Ah decreases were characterised, in which: (a) Particles are at rest, forming a plane bed (b) Particles mobilise due to their interaction with the waves on the surface of the liquid, generating a periodic roughness in the bed. (c) Particles begin to resuspend. The transition between these regimes depends on f , but not on the a radius of the particle. For regime (b), the length Aw and height hw of the waves in the liquid were correlated with the length Ap and the characteristic height of the particle bed A hp. The obtained results provide elements to characterise the interaction between the particles, the flow structures in the carrier liquid and the vessel. Also, they constitute a contribution regarding the perspectives of technological applications, such as those associated with the liquid template technique.
